I think you're going to need the Fred Slater marriage cert to get his father (if there is one).   I can't see one born in Shropshire, nearest is Staffordshire, or Warwickshire.

If you haven't got any family history software there is a free PAF one to download at the LDS family search site  http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
which you can use to start filling in the names and relationships.   All can then be exported (as a copy) to any other programme you like.   Always keep a backup somewhere, for eg on a memory stick.

The 'Companion' prints out 3 generation charts but for about £3 you can upgrade to the full one,  it's very good.   there are plenty of other free downloads to try as well , until you find one you like, like legacy, family historian, etc etc

Silvery thanks so much for your help thus far.   It's taking me a while to assimilate all the info given.   Unless I have misunderstood, what is puzzling me - unless it is just a coincidence - is that Fred Slater married an Ann Slater?

Thomas Mason 33 gamekeeper b Prestbury
Eliza 36 b Broxton
Sarah A 10 b Birtles
Mary J 7 b Henbury
John T 6 b Henbuyr
Lucy 4 b Henbury

Possible marriage (as Broxton is near to Whitchurch) but can't be certain

Thomas Mason to Eliza Sivill

Will have a look for Eliza Sivill b Broxton on an earlier census.

Re Thomas Mason to Eliza Sivill marriage, you could check the birth of one of the children for mother's maiden name.  Strangely enough the only clear one is Mary Jane Mason - June 1873, Macclesfield 8a/155.

There is an Eliza Sivill b Broxton way

1851   HO107/2171/12/17

George Sivill 38 ag lab b Bickerton
Sarah 28 b Bickerton
Eliza 6 b Bickerton
Charles 4 b Broxton
Hilary 3 b Broxton
John 7 mths b Broxton

I'm going to leave it there for now, let you catch up and fill in a family tree.
If you need any more get back to us, and I'm sure anyone will be pleased to help.   Happy sleuthing!!

Just as a ps - if you go to 'home' on this site, there should be an ad for ancestry free for two weeks -  you have to give them your credit card number, but cancel before the two weeks if you don't want to keep it up.

also there is this site http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl.

only goes up to about 1930 as yet.  Most marriages (if they got married) and deaths are in it.  Births only attracted a fine for non registration in 1875 and before that lots of people didn't bother so they can be patchy.

Some sites have their own BMDs for eg Cheshire http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cheshirebmd/index.html
and you can check them out here
