Rich family of Bermondsey completed
« on: Tuesday 28 October 08 10:11 GMT (UK) »
I have Robert Rich of Bermondsey (born on 8/11/1752) who married Sarah Bennett in Faversham in 1779.
I believe the parents of Richard were Thomas Rich and Frances Marston (or Marsten)of Bermondsey. Thomas was born in 1707 and died in 1775.
He married Frances on 30/4/1738 in London.
Their children were Temperance, Thomas, Robert, Jacoba and Ann.
Can anyone please give me the parents of Thomas, there was quite a large Rich family and I cannot place him.

Many thanks for the Thomas and Unity information. I have now googled him and found he died in 1740 and was born in Stoke Damerel (which I could not find in my British atlas). I am trying to track back the Rich line as far as I can as I have a great curiousity about a Cromwell/Rich link in my line.
I have Lavinia Riley, d.o. James Riley and Sarah Ann Rich (daughter of Robert Rich) who married Mortimer Maurice in 1855, a son of Mortimer snr. and Catherine Cromwell.
Two hundred years earlier there was another Rich/Cromwell marriage and I have long wondered if my family and this earlier marriage of 1656 are linked. I will insert a tiny piece of that info here.

Like her slightly older sister Mary, Frances (born 1638), the Cromwells’ last and youngest child, was still living with her parents during the Protectorate. Her name, too, was associated with an array of suitors, but her eye fell upon Robert Rich, grandson of Robert Earl of Warwick and son of Robert Lord Rich.

With my Thomas having died in 1740, the generations are being narrowed thanks to your information, and with the name of Robert Rich being in both the Frances Cromwell information and also in my line, I do wonder.
Incidentally Frances Cromwell and Robert Rich did not have children, he died not long after the marriage.
Any insight into either of the Rich and Cromwell families welcome.

Whereabouts did you find that Thomas and Unity in Google?    I can't.   The man I was referring to was baptised in Ashburton

This is from GENUKI:
"STOKE DAMEREL, a parish in Devonport borough, county Devon, including Devonport town and dockyard, Morice Town, New Passage, Keyham Docks, Ford, Swilly, and the north-western suburbs of Plymouth. See Devonport."
Hope that's a help.

I didn't know about Rileys or Cromwells

I am not so hot at cutting pasting from the internet as far as putting a site on to these pages are, I can easily do it on to an ordinary email, so will simply give you what I googled and it comes up very easily.
"thomas rich" unity bermondsey  - The "thomas rich" had to have the speech marks around his name, and it came up on a RootsWeb Devon site with the byeline as "re Thomas/Unity Rich"
The following generations all followed through with the information I already have.
It does interest me that Frances Cromwell married Robert Rich in 1656 and 200 years later, on my line, a child of a Cromwell married a child of a Rich, and further that the Rich name was also Robert Rich.
I have been curious to link the two events if possible although one is of the aristocracy and the others (mine) appear to be ordinary folk (like me)
What I sent you yesterday with the info about the Cromwell/Rich marriage, was only achieved when my daughter helped me to cut and paste it into my email, I tried to cut and paste the Rootsweb site on to this but failed miserably.
Thank you for the Stoke  Damerel information, will wait to see if you have any comments on the Rootsweb info.
Thanks for all you help. It is Boxing Day here in New Zealand, yesterday was a brilliant, hot, sunny day, a big family dinner with the kids in and out of the swimming pool, it does not get dark until about 9pm, then we went for a drive on the "Christmas Light Trail" which is those houses that have passed the criteria with Christmas lights and decorations, the list is published in the local paper.
Happy Christmas to all,
Robin

Hi Robin, my heart jumped in my throat when I saw the name of Robert Rich from Bermondsey in your post! He is my great, great, great, grandfather. My father who is 84 now, has been anxious to find out more about his ancestors before he dies and I have been trying for 3 years now - but, regrettably, I am stuck! We live in South Africa and it is so difficult to find anything from here. We are having a Rich family reunion on 7 September at my father's ranch and nothing will give us all more pleasure to find the "missing links". Can you help? Many thanks, Riana.

Hi Dai, thank you so much for your interest in my search. I notice that as a new member (I only signed up yesterday), I cannot enter into private messaging yet. Must have 3 posts or more before I am allowed to do it. Any suggestions? Regards, Riana
