1861 LOOKUP REQUEST LONDON
« on: Monday 27 October 08 20:59 GMT (UK) »
Please could someone do an 1861 lookup and see who was living at 7 Sugar Loaf Court in Cripplegate, City of London.  I am after my great great grandfather, James Purser, (he had a son called George who married Sarah Marchant at St Giles in 1866, at the time of this marriage they were at 7 Sugar Loaf Court, I suspect James was there as well but would love to know).

James Purser was a Beadle in the city and I am very interested to see if I can find him.

Thank you.

Hi Rachel
When was George born?    That might help to find them in 1861 and 51.  Have you got him in a later census you can quote?  There is a possible entry in 1861 for George age 19 who is a traveller.  Parents James "bath man" and Sarah living in Cock Lane, Farringdon.  RG9 216 66 24

Are your Pursers the ones who are at St James Bermondsey in 1871 (RG10/636 42 8 ): George age 28, Coachman? If so the above family should be correct - there's a brother David age 19 with George and Sarah Ann in 1871, b. St Andrews.

My goodness you are all so quick...I know very little about this lot compared to the rest of my family who were Kitchinghams which makes life much easier as you can imagine.

Here are the snippets I know, I haven't ferreted around in the censuses much yet...

According to some scribblings by my great granny George and Sarah had 5 children, George born Sept 29 1867, Sarah born May 29 1870, James born Sept 7th 1872, Caroline born Dec 23rd 1874 and Emily Elizabeth born Sept 11th 1877, which kind of fits what you've found so far.

George was dead by 1896 and Sarah remarried to John Levings Johnson at St Barts still in the City.  George's daughter Caroline, married my great grandfather Harry Cocksedge in 1896 Holy Trinity, Newington in London.  Also present at the marriage were Henry and Emily Purser.
Caroline's address is 21 Herring Street.

The only tantalising clue I have to James is his appearance on the marriage certificate where he listed as a Beadle which meant many things of course, although I seem to recall that Granny spoke of him as a Beadle at a hospital so I wonder if he was at Bridewell which was so close to Cripplegate..which is rather bizarre as at the same time my husband's ancestors were working as psychiatrists at Bethlem, all nuts together!

Thanks for your help.

Rachel

Sounds good, what do you think?

1871 census:
RG10/636 42 8
Bermondsey, Surrey
46 Keeton's Road

George Purser, head, 28, Coachman, b. Bloomsbury Middlesex
Sarah Ann, wife, 25, b. Queenhithe
George F, son, 3, scholar, b. Lambeth Surrey
Sarah Ann, dau, 10 mo, b. Bermondsey
David, brother, 19, Coachman, b. St Andrews Mddx

Sarah is widowed in 1881:

RG11/698 101 24

The Caroline age 23 should be George's sister  :D

Not sure if it helps, but Cock Lane is literally just down the road from St Barts hospital so that may be the hospital referred to.  Bridewell is close to Blackfriars and Fleet St.  St Barts would be closer to Cripplegate as that is where the Barbican now is.  Bethlem is very close to Cripplegate.  Not sure where Herring St is I am afraid
