Occupation gamekeeper
« on: Monday 27 October 08 00:14 GMT (UK) »
I would like to discover more information regarding the occupation of gamekeeper, particularly Glossop Derbyshire.
I believe my Wyatt family may have followed this occupation.

James Wyatt Snr may have been working for Bernard Howard, Duke of Norfolk between 1812 and 1832.
There was also a John Wyatt who applied for a general gamekeepers certificate between 1827 and 1832.
James Wyatt Jnr may have applied between 1827 and 1832.
I am trying to determine if this was my Wyatt family.

Thank you for referring these sites to me.Most informative.
I believe several members of my Wyatt family living in Glossop during the 1800s were gamekeepers for the Duke of Norfolk.
The first may have been James Wyatt Snr in the early 1800s.
A son John Wyatt bC1798 who gained certification is likely to have been the person involved in the accidental shooting. He was a butcher and cattle dealer living at Hall Fold Glossip in 184i.
A jury returned a verdict of manslaughter.

I have written to the records office, hoping that they can provide more information.
There was a report regarding the incident in The Derby Mercury of Feb 20 1833.

William Thorpe was my GGGGrandfather. He was a joiner/builder. I have only recently found the info about the shooting via The Derby Mercury . My relations in America told me years ago that William was accidentally shot by a gamekeeper employed by the Duke of Norfok.I have looked at your recent postings and note that Rex is researching the shooting also, could you give me his info so we can share info

I hope I am not duplicating messages, having already sent you a PM.I am sure we must have information to share, not only about the shooting but the respective families.
Best wishes

I am a gamekeeper and have never heard of any records on gamekeepers, try local papers, maybe county court records as charges may have brought.
Also may be worth contacting the Duke of Norfolk's estate office as they might still have a record of the shooting.
I say this because one estate I worked on had records of estate events back to the late 1700s

Thank you Renard
I have now resolved my query by reference to an 1833 newspaper report in the Derby Mercury and the kind cooperation of other interested people.
John Wyatt who was a gamekeeper for the Duke of Norfolk accidently shot a William Thorpe whilst shooting rabbits.
Whilst Wyatt was gaoled initially,he was subsequently acquitted on the grounds that it was an accidental shooting.
Thanks for your interest.
