Can you tell me of their status? Were they a British run outfit?

What time frame are you looking for Dan ?

Originally the Cape Mounted Rifles had been raised from Hottentots to help police the Eastern Frontier in 1827 but following a series of mutinies had been Europeanised in 1851

Hello again Annie,
                            I'm still on the trail of Seargent John Reilly/O' Reilly.

According to Neil1821, John may have left the 8th hussars around the time around the time the Indian Mutiny rolls were taken and joined the Cape mounted rifles. He may well have been a private at the time earning his Seargent's stripes in the 'Rifles'.

So around 1859 then.

Given that time-frame the Cape Mounted Rifles was then an Imperial unit, or as you put it a 'British run outfit'.  This unit was disbanded in 1870.

In 1878 the Frontier Armed & Mounted Police became a military unit designated as the Cape Mounted Riflemen (Colonial) under the control of the Cape Government.

Hi

Wonder if anyone can help please I am looking for information on my great great grandfather Ernest William Perugia.  In his petition for divorce in 1886 it states he joined the army and was based in Canterbury with his company in 1885 and on his daughters marriage certificate in 1914 it states he is deceased but was a Private in the Cape Mounted Rifles.

Would really appreciate any information or places to look.
