Gateshead Fell 1800's, 1900s. Can I help anyone?

Thanks for the photo Preshous, do you mean no. 7 is the house or the cottage just in the picture on the left, according to google map the cottage to the left is No. 7 but not sure how accurate it is. I have now confirmed from the Gateshead electoral rolls that the Mangan Family were living at No. 7 Church Road at least until 1928, possibly longer as my Great Grandfather Christopher Mangan died 1931 and his Wife Mary 1930 and by that time all of their children had married and were living elsewhere.
On another matter has anyone heard of Mill Cottage Sheriff Hill as my Great Aunt Agnes Kelly, Nee Mangan, was living there with my Great Uncle Aaron Kelly and their family early 1920's, have a number of Baptism records for their children from St Oswalds RC Church Wrekenton from the early 1920's which all show Mill Cottage as their parents Agnes and Aaron's home.

The house with the for sale sign is number 7 Church Road. Looking at OS maps the house's that you see today do not appear until after 1930 indeed old maps show that they were the first buildings to occupy the site since 1865.
I can only assume that the previous number 7 Church Road was elswhere on church road and was demolished prior to the new number 7 being built.

Thank you so much for your reply.  Unfortunatley I don't think this is one of my Waters family.  The only Thomas I can find married to Isabella was born in Cumberland.

I think that my Joseph left Gateshead Fell probably around the time of the 1810 miners strike but returned with his bride and brought up his family there but left again possibly at the time of the 1831 strike.  By the 1841 census they were living in Dewley. 

The rest of Joseph's family [I assume he had brothers and sisters] possibly stayed around the 'Fell' area but I can only find a Thomas Waters in Wrekenton born about the same time as Joseph.  James Waters and Margaret Spence may have been his parents but I have no solid evidence of this.

It's like looking for a needle in a haystack...I had no idea there were so many 'Waters' around!

Hello MIS, I've been doing some research for a relative whose ancestors came to Sydney from Durham in the 1880s. He was John Brown and worked at the Sheriff Hill Pottery Factory. He married Jane Best 1866 in Gateshead. I've found them in 1871 (Sheriff hill west side schedule 6) and 1881 census returns, but with so many of those names around, confirming their parents has been diffiicult. I was hoping you may get a chance to check the marriage register and see if their parents are listed (and anything else useful). 
Marriage is John BROWN and Jane BEST; at Gateshead in December quarter 1866. Registered Vol 10a, page 894.
Really appreciate any assist.

To Jeffery and Gary in particular. While I had previeously suggested that the inmates of the Sheriff hill Asylum would be buied ont the site oh Hodkin Park; because of the wall marker Potters ? on Sodhouse Bank. But I was looking at St Jhon's burial records, and came across a George HALL, (hopefully not my relation).

He died at the Sheriff Hill Asylum in 1858 Oct, aged 39, and was buried at St John's. So maybe the inmates were burried at St John's

As you know I have photographed all the available gravestones at St Johns and I can not see one for the George Hall you mention. I have a feeling that any one from the asylum buried in St Johns would have been done so in an unmarked grave.

1891 living at 19 Liddell Tce,Gateshead, Durham England RG12 /4176 F143 P32
1901 living at 9 Robert Place, Gateshead, Durham, England RG13/4752 F5 P1&2

Would these house be standing today?

Also would you have any Atkinson or McNallys among your cemetery photographs please?

Can you see if you have anything on a couple of other Millers - Ralph Miller buried Oct 21st 1862 and James Miller aged 3 in 1862 also.
Also a Gilbert Miller died 4th qtr 1863.

Hi Lesley I have checked trough my database and unfortunately there are no stones for your Miller's. Here is a list of what I do have just in case you recognize any of them.

Hi,
I was playing on the internet when I found this post and just got sooooooo excited, Eleanor Miller (nee Arnell) was daughter of Joseph Arnell ( a weaver) who died in Wrekenton Assylum. Joseph was born c1759 and died in 1844 - he is as far back as I have managed to trace. Any and all information regarding Arnell's / Millers would be very greatfully received. The Arnell's were "big" methodists and Joseph's sons from his first marriage, Joseph and Thomas were stonemasons. I'm hoping to track down a few more ancestors !
