Help to Decipher Birth Certificate
« on: Wednesday 22 October 08 20:13 BST (UK) »
I've received a copy of Elizabeth Hoadley's birth certificate and I believe she was the younger sister of my 2 x great grandmother Sarah Hoadley.  I really hoped that by finding the maiden name of her mother it would open up some new research.  Unfortunately I can not read it.  I would be grateful if there is anyone out there who could give it a go and come up with some ideas.  Thanks.

I think I agree with Tati, the F certainly looks similar to that at the beginning of Father.

Furmenger/Furminger. It's a Kent/Sussex/Surrey name, and is often spelled Firminger/Firminger etc - I have found dozens of different spellings, some of them one-off typos, but essentially varaitions on F*RM*G*R. The asterisks can represent pretty much any vowel, including Y is early versions, and there may or may not be N before the G (or even instead of it). All of this means that the variants do not appear next to each other in the alphabet, although as far as I know it never starts with PH!

Where and when did the birth take place?

Hi, In reply to Mean Genie's reply.  The birth took place at Heavy Waters in Chadwell which is just north of the river.    The Hoadley family were travellers/romanies in Essex & Kent - her siblings were born in Hartney Wintney & Romford.  Thanks.
