I have the K to Z Index for Middlesbrough 1851 Census. I have now found my family.  They are RESE James 26 James 10 months and Jane 28.  And SPENDELOW Edward 5 and John aged 57.

No wonder I was unable to find them!

There are 6 people named WOOD there too, including Robert Wood Ralph WOOD!!

Thank you, and thank you again, as I don't know whether I would have found them, but for your help.

Hi Noreen

If it helps at all, I have Spencelayh family in this sort of area:

William SPENCELAYH married Mary COVERDALE,  I only know of 2 children

William SPENCELAYH and Thomas Coverdale SPENCELAYH bn 1855 in West Hartlepool

Thomas married Mary Ann COLLARD in 1874 and had 2 children that I know of:

Jane Ann SPENCELAYH born 1877 and Thomas SPENCELAYH born 1879 died 1880 West Hartlepool

My direct line are the COLLARD family.   :)

My son deleted my Family Tree Maker by mistake when up grading my computer I had to re enter a lot of it.

Thank you again

I was most interested to discover this thread.  I have just made a connection on one of my distant twigs to the Spencelayh family, and after a frustrating day realised that they were listed as Spendelow in 1851 - so snap!

Edward and Sarah's son, Thomas married Eliza Knights in 1899 which is the connection.

Noreen, there is the family of John Spencelayh and Elizabeth Tiplady on the IGI, they were
Margaret 1815
Elizabeth 1818
John 1820
Jane 1822
Edward 1824

I think this is the right lot.

Elizabeth died aged 37 and was buried 11 June 1827 and he married Isabella Wood in 1828 - perhaps this is where the association with the Wood family first occurs.  As you can see this implies that Margaret's son Edward was born out of wedlock!

Ah well, he won't be the first and he won't be the last, if he was a closer relation I would have ordered the birth certificate, but not at the new prices!

Hope that is of some interest,
Brian

I have quite a lot of Spenceley/Spencely etc info and amongst it I have some Spencelayh records .

to add a bit more  there was an Edward Spencelayh married in St Hilda's church Middlesbrough 30th Nov 1868 and his Father was Robert Wood Spencelayh, a Mariner !

I've noticed that quite a lot of the Spencelayhs were Mariners . There were a William and a Phillip Spencelayh in the Middlesbrough area who were Mariners.
