Looking for Irene Penorwood Hardwick
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 23:56 BST (UK) »
Irene was born 23rd Feb 1894 at 17 River Street, Brompton, Gillingham.   Her mother was Elizabeth Hardwick and her father was apparently John Phillips.   His wife was Sarah Jane Penhorwood Shutt and he and Sarah "adopted" Irene.   She is living with them as John's daughter at 43 Canterbury Street, Gillingham, in 1901, although for some strange reason the enumerator has her name down as Jessie!  He also got the names of some of John and Sarah's sons wrong...

Please, can anyone help with further information on Irene (or her mother) and particularly what became of her after 1901?

Many thanks,

Diana

Hi Casalguidi

Many thanks for the copy of Irene's baptism, which I hadn't come across - very interesting.   On her birth certificate there is no mention of a father although the address is the same.  Her mother, Lizzie, used to visit her after she was adopted by John & Sarah Phillips.

I understand Irene bore a very strong resemblance to John Phillips, her supposed father, but the middle name is a puzzle.   It seems to be an attempt to copy Sarah's middle name (Penhorwood).   Four of their sons also had Penhorwood as their middle name and two of them would have been old enough to be Irene's father.

Poor Irene seems to have just faded out of the family but if that is where she belongs then I would like to do her the justice of putting her back.

Hello,

I was looking for a Irene Penhorwood Phillips, born in Kent Feb. 1984, who came to Canada with only her mother.  The next pieces of timeline I have is she was in an Alberta 1911 census, then married William Greenslade in December 1914, in the Tom Smith house at the southe west on 31-28-11 (so Berry Creek/Sunnynook area) The ceremony was performed by Sid Burdge.

Irene died in August 1942, of liver cancer, and is buried inthe Berry Creek Cemetary (Alberta, Canada).

Their children: Roy b. 1917, Hugh b. 1918, Lloyd 1919, Charlie 1921, Billy 1922, Tom 1924, Ivor and Irene b. 1926, Jim 1930, and Graham 1931.  Dorothy died in infancy in 1915.

Do you have any information on her parents?  Particularly Elizabeth as I'm trying to find their immagration information.

Thanks!
Bobbie

Hi Bobbie

How amazing to get a reply after all this time!   I'm so happy to know that Irene made a good life for herself in Canada but sad to know that she died relatively young.    How are you related to her?

I am the great granddaughter of Sarah's sister Rhoda, so not really related at all, but I have been fascinated by Irene's story and always wanted to find out what became of her.

I have not been able to find Lizzie Hardwick in the census but there is a Sarah Hardwick working for John & Sarah Phillips in the 1891 census and I wonder if they were related.   I will try to do more digging.

I will PM you with my email address as I have some documents you may be interested in.

Best wishes,

Diana

Hi Casalguidi

Sorry to bother you, but where did you find the emigration info?   I have been looking for them on FindMyPast with no luck...

If you search the National Archives of Canada for the "Southwark" arriving 1906 (6/7 May) you will be able to view the passenger lists for the ship.
