Where the 1916 & 1911 Canada census's are saying Medicine Hat, I think they are generally referring to southern rural Alberta.

The addresses are written as section - township - range - West of the 4th meridian.  This is the LSD system used to identify locations in the province.  The province is divided every 6 miles by a 'township' which is the north south running markers, and 'range' for the east west running markers.  Then each square 6 miles are split into 36 sections.

Alfred and Lizzy are at 30-20-11W4.  William and Irene were married at 31-28-11W4, and the 1916 census record for William, Irene and Walt (William's brother)  (& my old family records) show them at 28-28-11-W4, which puts them 8 townships from Alfred and Lizzy.  This works out to be 48 miles appart.  Which for rural Alberta, isn't that far away and easily where everyone met.
