Lynda,
What the lady told you is probably correct where the burial is in a later Municipal Cemetery, like the one in Uphall, but not mixed in graveyards belonging to a Church, you will not find Catholic burials in Presbetarian Churchyards. I would imagine the burial in 1874 would take place in either Bathgate or Linlithgow, only a few miles from Uphall.

James.

Hi There,

I wonder if anyone can help us. For 2 years I have been researching my husbands side of the family. Their name was McGoohan/Mcgouchan/magohan/McGooghan. Or probably anything that sounds vaguely like it.
His great grandparents wer Patrick and Sarah McGoohan, Sarah's maiden name was Conway. We know that they got married in Edinburgh under the name of McGowan and lived their lives out in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh. We also know that Patrick had a sister called Mary, who married a Kelly and they also lived in the Cowgate.

We were also able to tell that Ptricks parents were John McGoohan and Bridget, ms Dunigan. We thought that Bridget, c1800 was still in Ireland. We have now found evidence that Bridget McGoohan was in the West Lothian area of Uphall and died at Niddry, Uphall. We also have further evidence that she had a daughter also called Bridget, c1833. Bridget married Edward McCann (also from Ireland) in Linlithgow in 1856 and had several children. Bridget c1858, Margaret, c1861, Mary Angus c1863, Edward, c1870, James c1865, John 1868.
Bridget c1833 died on 11/01/1886 at Simpsons Rows, Uphall, Broxburn.

Can anyone tell me if Simpson Rows are still standingand Where they may be buried. (THey were RC) and if anyone can connect to them.

Thank you in anticipation.

Kind regards,
Lynda

Hello,

I have done some research on the McCann family in Broxburn, Uphall parish as well. One of my relations married a daughter of Elizabeth McCann, the eldest of 8 children of Edward McCann and Bridget McGoohan. Elizabeth married George Taylor in 1880 in the Church of Scotland. Their address was 184 Greendykes Rd in Broxburn.

George Taylor (1856-1902) and Elizabeth McCann Taylor (1857-1936) are buried in Lair C46 in Uphall Cemetery. George was from Fife and Elizabeth Uphall.

The second daughter of Edward McCann and Bridget McGoohan was Bridget and did marry a Kelly. Thomas in St Nicholas and John Cantius RC Church Broxburn in 1878.

Thomas Kelly and Bridget McCann Kelly also had a daughter Bridget born 1890 in Broxburn, married Tom McGlone from Sligo in Broxburn in 1913 and immigrated to America, specifically Brooklyn. Their son Tom was a lawyer and respected member of the Scottish community in Brooklyn.

I have not come across a Simpsons Rows in Uphall.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
John

Hello John,

Thank you so much for this information.  It is much appreciated.  I have not done much work on this side lately as I kept going round in circles and getting nowhere.  It is rather funny as I have a freind who lives in Greendykes road and has done for the last 30 years.  She lives up the top of the road at the Albion Cottages.

The only info that I have on Simpsons rows is that they were on the death cert of Bridget McCann,(Mcgoohan).  Edward was employed as a labourer at the oil works.  They were knocked away years ago.

Kind regards, and a big thank you,
Lynda
