1861 & 71 Census - Durham family
« on: Tuesday 01 February 05 22:59 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please take a look in the 1861 and 1871 censuses for William Durham, born in the early 1850s?

He seems to have lived in the Marylebone area and when married in 1873 his address is given as 38 Shouldham St, Marylebone. His occupation at that time is given as French polisher.

His father is also William Durham, pianoforte maker.

By 1881 Wm jr had moved to Hartlepool, Co Durham, but his dad may still have been in London.

Thanks

Thanks Carol, nice to get a reply after all this time.

On the face of it this could be the right family, but I can't be sure. Perhaps if I can track this family up to 1881 I'll get some clues, as I know William Durham junior is married and living in Hartlepool, Co. Durham by then.

The 1881 gives his birthplace as "Harcott, Marlebone", which even allowing for error doesn't look much like St Andrew Middlesex.

By the way, did you find them in the 1861 or 1871 census?

Hello

I'm doing a bit of housekeeping and wondering if you are still looking for this information?  If so has any further information come to light in the meantime?

As this is an old request, if we don't hear from you in a while, I'll move it to the Completed section.

Regards
Biker  :)

Good to see a bit of activity on this request after all this time, especially as I still haven't tracked down the two William Durhams. It's amazing how common the name is! ???

Thanks for your assistance Bob. I have now found the family who were at Clarendon Square in 1861 and Eversholt St in 1871 living at 28 Carlton Street, St Pancras in 1881. Mary Ann Durham is the head and Edgar, John and Laura are living with her. I know Wm Durham junior was living in Hartlepool in 1881 so this could still be the family but I can't make the link. The younger Wm Durham's age varies considerably in later censuses and at his death in 1937 and I haven't managed to find his birth.

Good point about Harcourt St. I had spotted that myself and oddly enough Wm Durham's wife's birthplace is given in 1881 as "Brown, Marlebone", Brown St being right next to Shouldham St. It would be interesting to know which parish covers the area, as presumably that is the meaning of St Andrew, St James etc in the 1861 census.

Regards
