Lost Black's
« on: Monday 20 October 08 16:25 BST (UK) »
My gt grandfather was John Jones (b around 1875) but he was originally John Black his father was William Black(b around 1851) and his mother Margaret Jones (b around 1849)
I have found William in the 1861 census as a child living in Menai Bridge but he dissapears from the 1871 census there is a William Black in the 1881 census who is listed as a widower.
I know that Johns mother died and he went to live with his grandparents but can find no trace of him anywhere. I think the confusion is caused by him taking his grandparents name any advice what to do next would be appreciated. John was known as Jones throughout his adult life but was registered as Black

William black's father was James who came to Menai bridge to work on the Britannia Bridge  He married a welsh girl Ellinor ellis from Cadnant  and they had Catherine, sophia, James, John William who married first Margaret Jones then Margaret Parry, Jane and Henry who married Mary Todd and moved to liverpool.  Ellinor died1866 James Sophia and Jane died as children.  Henry was my Great grandfather.  William had three children, Sophia, John Henry and Ellen Jane who lived with relatives after his first wife died.  John  must have kept his own name because William and Margaret had their grandson, William Richard living with them at Tan Dinas.  He was subsequently killed in action and is on the war memorial in Llanfair PG.  Margaret sold Tan dinas to my grandparents after William died and she went to live in a little house by the level crossing.   There was also "Auntie Kate" whom I suspect was the daughter of Catherine - she was Kate Black but she married at least three times.  I'm interested in finding out if there are any other relatives of the black family still in the Anglesey area - I know there were cousins there when I was a child.  The station Master - if my memory serves me was gwylim hughes - he was connected to the black  family in some way, but I've not worked it out.
Most of the blacks are buried on church island, but my grandparents are buried at Llanfair pg.   Phyl :D

Hi, John Jones (Black) was my gt grandfather he married mary Catherine Williams and they had 6 Children

Sophie married jack Stathem and lived in SOuthport until after Jack died when she went out to Canada to live with her family
John Jones married  Emma Nuttall had 2 Children Alison and Claire and lived in manchester until his death
Blodwen Married Walter Kirkman emigrated to Canada and had 2 children Walter and mary walter and Mary are still in Canada
Ellen married Albert Berry and had 2 children Patricia and ian. Ian died in childhood Ellen Albert Patricia and her husband emigrated to Canada in the 50's and Aunty ellen who is the only sibling still alive celebrated her 100th birthday in November last year
Mair married William Tomlinson and had 2 children Ian and William they live in Kendal
margaret (my grandmother married Robert lewis they had 4 Children Ellen lives in Bangor and her 2 children live in Caernarvon, John lives in Rhos on sea, margaret my mum and Robert who lives in Connahs Quay John and Robert have no children

From what I have been able to find out Johns sister Sophie married someone from South wales but we are not sure who There are still cousins living around Angelsey I have some family letters I am in the process of sorting out. There was an Auntie nelly who lived in Holwell and had no Children not sure if she is Ellen Jane. Its all abit confusing with some of the family known as Black but my side taking on the name Jones

James Black William and Henry's father is a bit of a dead end at the moment it seems he was born in Heligoland and I have been unable to trace anything from there

No, I haven't been able to make anything of the Heligoland bit either except that his father was called Frederick.  I suspect that mother was sophia as there has been such a continuation of sophias through the next three generations. My grandfather's sister, Auntie Maggie says the family originated in Oban, according to my mother.  Auntie mag is long gone but I'm meeting up with some of her descendants who may have more info as she lived with them.
Do you have the Liverpool Connection?    Henry black(born1850) married Mry Todd from Dumfries-shire.  They had  7 children  Henry (1883) James (1876 Menai Bridge), Sophia 1877 died young, Mary Ellen known as May, David, Robert Lockhart,(1885), Maggie Lockhart 1891 all born Liverpool except James.
Henry married Maria Jones, and they had Henry(Harry) 1911 and David 1913.
Harry married Mary McNair and had me and my brother Roger who died 1978.
Maggie Married Richard(Fred) Bradshaw and had 3 daughters, beatrice may, Freda Mary and Marjorie all now deceased.  David married Jessie Stewart and James married another Jessie.  I said that Nana had bought Tan dinas off Auntie Margaret when William died - apparently Uncle Dave and Auntie Jessie bought the house next door - Merddyn.  It was a little Black enclave!  David had 2 girls May and Peggy.  Peggy married Stan Waring and may married Alan Kirk.  May had Julie who ended up in Australia and Peter who went to Dubai .
 ::)

If John went as john Jones all his life then there is another male black missing - who was the father of william richard - I always assumed that was John!  More research necessary.

Did you see that ellen jane was living in llangefni with an aunt in 1881- Elizabeth pierce, widow, 65  EJ was 9

Did any of the family live Deiniolen or Bethesda way - my mother could remember visiting relatives in that direction when they were first married.
Cheers  Phyl

I have now got a picture of JAMES and ELLINOR BLack which I would like to share with you, also their son Henry

Incidentally with regard to William whom you could not find on the 1871 census - he was a mariner at the time, so probably was not registered.  I have a report for him in 1872 0n board a ship called Nancy.
He was the mate. he came from Menai Bridge and the captain and another mate both came from Llanfair, and the captain was william williams.  His previous ship was the Maggie Woodburn.
