Guye family
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 16:28 BST (UK) »
Trying to find info about Swiss watchmaker Fritz Guye who lived in Tottenham in 1871 but was in Orwell Cottage in Twickenham by 1881.
I wonder if he could be the father of my illegitimate great grandfather, Fritz Guye Browning (b 1879, Newington) whose mother, Mary Jane Browning, was a watch spring polisher in Newington in 1881.
Any info would be gratefully received - all I've found are the census returns from 1871, 1881 and 1901. Can't find Fritz Guye in 1891 as an older F Guye (with a different wife and family) is living in Orwell Cottage in that year.

I have been trying to trace some info on the Louisa & the children Matilda & Augusta in the 1891 census with Frits Guye without any success.

There is nothing for them with the surname Guye in the 1901 census nor any birth registrations for Matilda & Augusta with the name of Guye.  Now sign of a marriage for Frits Guye to a Louisa, the only marriage is this.

Frits Guye= Gertrude Percy Ashton-Glover
June 1884  St George Hanover Square  1a  767

Could it be that Fritz & Louisa were not married & the children were reg'd with their mother's surname.  ???   ???

Even entering the Christian names only in the 1901 census yielded nothing useful.

Hi. No, that's the one that isn't him! Presumably a relative. However, the marriage details you give are of the correct Fritz, so many thanks for that.

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ has a couple of hits. In 1888, the firm of P & A Guye (77 Farringdon Road and another address in Geneva), was dissolved by mutual consent of Phillipe Guye, Auguste Guye, Fritz Guye.

There's also something about bankruptcy proceedings for the above in 1879.  Phillipe was of St. Jean La Tour, Geneva, and Auguste and Fritz of Macaulay-road, Clapham Common.

Is he the same as the one who died in 1901 in Brentford? Did you try looking for a will?  His son by Gertrude (I assume), Edward Fritz Guye, moved to Australia and was in WWI there, later a member of parliament (http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/re-member/bioregfull.cfm?mid=1118 )

http://doc.rero.ch/lm.php?url=1000,25,1,18930217_039_08.pdf
 - some info here!  Second page, starts bottom left under the heading 'Hologerie' - it's a wee obituary for Auguste, who died in London, and it mentions his younger brother, Fritz.

Fritz Guye was in Orwell Cottage as of the 1894 and 1896 directories...  ???  In the 1878 directory, August Guye is at 17 The Terrace, Peckham Road, Camberwell.  In 1881, Auguste is listed as Auguste George, at Macaulay Rd "Fairview", with various children under the surname George born in Paris and Chiswick (his wife Heloise died in 1923 under the surname Guye).

I suppose there are no good hints on Fritz Guye Browning's marriage certificate? Unless he's mentioned in Fritz's will (or maybe Auguste's?), or you can find a link to one of the addresses that the Guye family used, I think it will be tricky to confirm the link, although it does look very likely.

Extremely helpful, Jorose - thanks. Not just the info re Fritz and brothers but the expanding of horizons with the resources. I'd got the Aussie son but none of the other stuff.
Nothing on the marriage cert - I suspect he never knew that he was illegitimate, as the family thought his grandparents were his parents. But I haven't looked for a will yet, so shall do so.
Thanks again.
