Death certificates from the GRO as usual but if later than about 1920s you will have to search the full registers. You can do this on the various subscription websites though,

As to the spelling - it wasn't unusual to see variations, although most had settled down (!) by the beginning of the 20th century.  Having said that, my own family name was often mis-spelt and when I changed it to something less unusual on marriage, I was surprised to find that the same thing still happens!

The Edward/ Edmund thing I have come across before & wonder whether someone just misread the document?  I have Caroline/ Catherine in my family though and that can't just be misreading!

 ;)

From your post today on Irish immigrants to Wales thread:
Hi
I'm completely stuck with my Connolly/Connellys that originated from bandon, Co Cork and settled in Merthyr Tydfil. They moved sometime to Wales after 1881 but before 1891. I am looking for Patrick and Catherine Connolly b 1846, with children of Edward b1872 in Bandon, Daniel b 1874, Mary b 1877 and Ptrick b1880, all in Ireland. I have written to the Monsignier of Bandon parish and although Edward states in later census Bandon was his birth place there are no records of any of the childrens births/basptisms nor  the marriage of Patrick and Ellen ???

IGI shows good match for this family but it's possible the details you have aren't correct if your only sources of ages are census records.
Patrick Connelly m. Catherine Reilly. Children:
1. Edmund born 21 Feb.1870 Co. Cork
2. Daniel born 16 Aug.1872 Co. Cork
3. Patrick born 27 Nov.1879 Cork, Co. Cork
Note: not all Irish births are in IGI so there could be other children born in Ireland.

Civil registration of Catholic marriages in Ireland started in 1864. See LDS pilot site for index to Irish civil registrations:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347
You need to find a marriage for a Patrick Connelly and then a marriage for a Catherine Reilly (spellings may vary) where the date, registration district, page and volume numbers match up.

As regards to Irish names, Edmund and Edward seem to be interchangeable even in more recent times.

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

please can someone help :( I am trying to tace the Conolly/Connelly family that originated from Bandon? in Co Cork to Merthyr Tydfil sometime around 1870/1880. I think it was Patrick and Catherine Connolly (b 1846) who had Edward Connelly(b1872), Daniel (b1874) Mary (b1871) and Patrick (b1880) all born in Co Cork. In the 1901 census RG 13/5030 Folio 106 pg 9 they are listed as living at 305 High St Penydarren, Catherine died 27/5/1901 (widow of Patrick). By the time that my direct anscestor married (Daniel Connolly) on 5/2/1910 at the Roman Catholic Church in Dowlais to Elizabeth Morgans he was living at Mayfield Terrace, Penydarren. I have been told that Daniel was a staunch Roman Catholic and worked in the coal mines. My grandfather was born on 3/2/1916 at Warren Hill, Britton Ferry, Neath, he is listed as Edmund Connelly but married as Edward Connolly! ??? where do I start?

In addition another brother has been found John b 1873 who married Hanora McCarthy Jan 1/4 1893 in Merthyr. Any information on Hanora is proving elusive........can anyone help please?
