Both me and my husband have twins in our families and we have twin boys ourselves (or should I say men - they are 31 now!) Strangely both sides are fraternal twins - so we don't see double.

The first lot of twins on my husband's side are in 1644 - they both died within days and then in 1655 the second lot of twins survived. Both sets to the same parents. The first twins on my side, that I know about, are in 1829 - one survived and one didn't. Since then there have been quite a few twins on both sides - none identical. My poor daughter is really excited at the thought that she might be the next to have twins!  :o

I didnt know of any twins in my family until I started doing family history. The first set were in my mum's side, back in the 1860s and I havent yet followed them forwards to see who they married etc.
However, the other set I found follows a sad story. I found out that in my dad's family we had a criminal. So excited I was, so I found out that in 1840, he was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing some potatoes and some flour, the scoundrel.
About 2 years after he was imprisoned on a hulk at Gosport, his wife then had 2 boys. Then just 9 and 11 days later the boys both died. The certificates state that they had a disability from birth.
Unknown to my ancestors, his appeal for a kings pardon was about to be granted and he came back to live with the family just 4 years after being sentanced and never left the country at all.
I have the death certs but have got the birth certs on my 'to send for' list, so dont know who will be reigstered as the father. I supposed that there is an outside chance thsat she got to visit him and the children were conceived during that visit, but I reckon she thought, as you would, that she would never see her husband again as the chances of someone coming back from transportation was low, and so started a relationship with someone else, lost her babies and then her husband comes back out of the blue. I feel really sorry for her.
here goes....
BATSON - Norwich then London
RAWLINS -  London
JENNER - Sussex then London
SEAL - London
MARNS - Ireland(?) then London
POWELL - Wales then London
BENSTED - Kent
DODSWORTH - Yorkshire

DORTON - London
ALEXANDER - Scotland then London
BARNARD - ?
JUSTICE - Ireland then London
HILTON - London
ZIMMERMAN - London?

Priot to 1837 you have to have access to the original records to be sure they are twins.

The most common record is baptism and only sometimes were the birth dates recorded (the further back the less common)

Unless you have the birth dates recorded you could be just looking ar multiple baptisms.

Thanks for that Rog. That was something that had not crossed my mind. However now you have pointed it out that makes sense.

Funny thing I found a baptism the other day on 25th December

The 25 December, one of the few holidays during the year was a favourite day for baptisms and weddings amongst the poor labouring classes.

I have a familly of 13 and was very confused at 1st as the parents decided to baptise them in 3s and 4s. I had a heck of a job sorting them out. None of them werre twins.
