Mason/Tru(e)man in Tottenham Completed
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 07:02 BST (UK) »
On the 1851 census at The Hale, 6 Brook Place, Tottenham, I have John MASON age 25, his wife Ester  (20) and son John (1) with George TRUMAN and his wife Allefore (?).  At 6 Brook Lane is Ester TRUMAN (60) and her son Timothy.  Ester MASON's maiden name was TRU(E)MAN so I assume that the people at No 6 are Ester's mother and brother and that George at No 6 is also her brother.

On Googlemap I can see "The Hale" at Tottenham but not "Brook Lane" which I suppose has now gone.  Am I right in assuming that is where they lived? (I see a "Brook Road" in Tottenham but near to Wood Green so I am assuming that The Hale is a better match - the census district is "Tottenham High Cross Hard")

John MASON and Ester/Esther/Hester TRU(E)MAN (various certificates use different spellings) were married Sep qr 1847 reg at Hackney but I haven't got the certificate.  I would love to know where they were married, or if there are other children earlier than the John on the census.

The Masons emigrated to Australia in 1852 so they won't appear on any later records.  I cannot find either of them, or any of Ester's family on the 1841 census.

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers, Judith in Australia

At 6 Brook Lane is Ester TRUMAN (60) and her son Timothy.

Looking at the 1851 image, they are living at "The Hale " 2 Brook Place HO107/1702 f275 p18

Hi Shaun

Thanks for that.  The Masons at No 6 also have The Hale in their address.  "The Hale" seems to be written at the top of the column.  Do you think it is "The Hale" that is still shown on Googlemap and the, perhaps, Brook Place came off it?

Thanks again,  Judith

The Trumans were also at 2 Brook Place in 1841 ( green grocer Esther, daughter Esther and sons George Timothy and William)

Thanks again Shaun.  Of course it was A*** that I looked at for the 1841 census and thought they must have been mis-transcribed. so I'm extra grateful to you!

Hi Jude,
I am researching John & Esther Mason and their families and have just come across your post. If you are still seeking information (as I am) I am sure we could help each other. I think I have finally solved the problem of John's parents and I have his two siblings as well.
