Hi

If it's after 1875, then SP is the best resource unless you live near a large records office/archives in Scotland.  To my knowledge, there are no Scottish records on FindMyPast.

The IGI www.familysearch.org is a very good source for Scottish records before about 1875. Not all of these are online though but the films can be ordered through a Family History centre.

Note that the SP records prior to 1855 (baptisms/marriages) are derived from the old parish records of the C of Scotland, although the IGI does have some records of other denominations.

Hello Eileen

findmypast doesn't cover Scotland for bmds, but you can find the Scottish census on ancestry which might help.

If you don't have his marriage certificate, it might be useful in showing his father's occupation, which would help to find him in the census

you can order it (if this is the correct one) through the Yorkshire bmd website http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/

Hi

If they were Roman Catholic, they wouldn't appear on SP before 1855. Some of the RC records have survived  but I don't know which ones.

The Scottish censuses are up as an index on Ancestry but not on FindMyPast. Again, SP has an index and images for them.  You can also order films of the censuses via FH Centres.

Here are a couple of threads that might be useful:

No, but you can check all the John Callaghans to see if there is one with that occupation

Have had a quick look but can't see one living in or from Dundee.... still looking...

As Gadget says (morning Gadget  :)) ancestry just has the index to the Scottish census, whereas scotlandspeople has the full images.

If you have his birth cert, what was his mother's full name?  It's possible to find them in 1901 census if they were married by then

You can order the post-1906 births via Scotlands People but they cost £10 and it takes a few weeks to get them. However, this would give you both parents names and when they married which would help you get a 'hook' on them in the censuses and their own births.

Have you got the ref of the 1909 birth?
