1841 census Hendon -Suckling
« on: Tuesday 01 February 05 15:43 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for Susannah Suckling age possibly 4 in 1841 her father is Robert Suckling. Looking for information on the rest of the family, I think they stayed in Hendon this was where Susannah was born. I think she was born in either 1836 0r 1837 she married Henry Browett in 1859. She would be 14 in the 1851 census any help would be greatly appreciated, I could maybe help with some Scottish research if interested

Dear Lewy I am afraid i havent got Susannahs birth  certificate yet i think she was born just before civil registration, I have looked at the indexes 1837online. I havent been able to get the parish records for Hendon as i live in Scotland and dont know how to get them online. I have got Susannah in the 1881 census she is married and aged 44. I know from her marriage certificate that her father Robert Suckling worked as a Smith. I am still learning how the English record system works I am used to the Scottish records and my family come from small villages which is easier to search. The 1881 census said that she was born in Hendon, this is all the information i have. If you could help in any way that would be great.    LesleyJ

I forgot i have the 1851 census surname index for Hendon, Barnet and Edmonton
I found Suckling's on the Hendon HO 107/1700  467r, 474r, 474v, does these numbers make any sense, i also found Sucklings on HO 107/1703 185r, 290r
and on HO 107/1702 107v. Is this of any help. Susannah might also be put in the census as Susan, she would probably be 14 in1851, thanks LesleyJ

Hi       I also forgot to mention that Susannah Suckling b1836/1837 could possilbly be related to Admiral Nelson, whose mother is called Catharine Suckling and their family where from Norfolk. I am trying to find a connection, with the Suckling family in Middlesex and Nelsons relatives.  If anybody could possibly find Susannah in the 1841 or 1851 so i could find out more details about her parents that would be great.

I also have microfiche for 1851 census with SURNAMES ONLY and reference numbers for Edmonton, Barnet and Hendon if anybody is needing some help this might save some time just get in touch all the best with your research LesleyJ

Hi Lesley,

I'm glad it's not just me who's been thinking this about the Sucklings and Lord Nelson - especially with the apparent lack of Male inheritors around. You've managed to find a Susan who isn't on my list - I only started searching this weekend, but I can quite a long list of names already. It gets really confusing when they all use the same first names! Anyway, my Great Grandmother's name was Mary Elizabeth Suckling, and she and my Nan come from Cambridgeshire. Mary lived 1889-1978 and married Robert Charles Palmer in the 1920s. Her parents (we think) were Fredrick Suckling and Patty. My Nan was told by her Mum that we were related to Lord Nelson, but no one has ever bothered to look into it. I come from a very religious family too - almost my whole known family has close ties with various churches and missions.

There does appear to be a very awkward gap between my family and any connections I have come across so far from the famous Earls and suchlike. All the Suckling lines I have found so far have ended. This doesn't appear to make sense as obviously the name was passed down the male line from my Great Great Grandfather, and they have been keen to pass the line on to distant relatives of Sucklings in the past. It's tempting to think that someone in the past has covered something up. Oh yes, and my Nan did mention what they apparently call the "Suckling nose" - something I have been lucky enough to inherit! All rather strange I think.

Hope this information is useful to you.

I have my family tree on http://www.GenesReunited.co.uk

Chris
