Thorpe Le Soken Church Records
« on: Thursday 16 October 08 13:45 BST (UK) »
Hello rootschatters.

I am wondering if anyone out there has access to the parish records for St Michael's aka St Mary's in Thorpe Le Soken.  I have checked a couple of web sites but their 3 pounds a record is way out of my league and our good friends at Freereg haven't started transcribing this church yet.  The surname I am interested in is Beer/e.

Many thanks

SEAX is very good, but for the time being, the register I need to consult isn't on line. As I live in France, I can only work with internet.
I'm looking for the baptism of my GGgrandfather born in Thorpe le Soken around 1798? Could you please help? I would be so grateful.

I have been transcribing several registers for freereg in Ardleigh, so can eventually help on people baptized there.

Hi vabbott,
Thanks for answering my message.
My GGgrandfather was John THORP ( spelt THORPE sometimes) born around 1796-1798 in Thorpe le Soken. Do you think you can help?
Best regards

Hi Riboga  I looked at the records today I could not find John Thorpe baptised at Thorpe le Soken
I did find the following

20th Aug 1788 Henry son of Henry and Martha Thorpe
25th Dec 1792 Abraham son of Henry and Sarah Thorpe
21st Feb 1796 Harriet daug of Henry and Sarah Thorpe
3rd May 1801 William son of Henry and Sarah Thorpe
2nd May 1802 Sarah daug of Henry and Sarah Thorpe

no more baptisms at Thorpe le Soken up to 1810 for Thorpe

Sarah Thorpe buried 15th May 1802
Sarah Thorpe infant buried 15th May 1802

I suspect the first entry is a mistake by the clergy who sometimes did not put a entry into the records until some days had past so he may have got her name wrong also I suspect given the gaps in the years that this family may have move around  so it maybe that John was born/bap in another village close to Thorpe le Soken.

I drove through Thorpe le soken today.

Best Regards Brian

Hi Brian,

Thank you so much for the information you gathered for me. I've never been to Thorpe and haven't the opportunity to go either, my only family in GB is a cousin in Manchester not concerned in the least about our ancestors!

It was in the 1861 census in Weeley that John Thorp, head of the family, was marked as born in Thorpe le Soken. He married Jemima Vince Ribbans in Thorpe on 2 Feb 1828, and their children were born in Weeley.

I'll have to search the villages around.

Thanks again.

Best regards,

Michèle

Hi Michele   I suspect that John believed he was born/bap at Thorpe le Soken it maybe the place he remembers from his childhood but the family would seem to have moved about ,not very far, as you say John got married in Thorpe and lived in Weeley only a short distance away,I would suggest that maybe the clergy forgot to enter John in the records but this would be a very grave error, much more than getting a name wrong ,the church records were used to make certain that if a person needed parish relief that the parish he or she was born in footed the bill.
I will keep my notes and when I next get to the records I will have a look at some other villages close by.
Best Regards Brian.
