Sighthill M.I's
« on: Thursday 16 October 08 11:34 BST (UK) »
Anyone able to help me out with Monumental Inscriptiosn from Sighthill Cemetery?

The name I am looking for is Dairon, particularly Helen Dairon (although any would be interesting) who died in 1860.  Her husband was James Dairon who died before her but I don't know when and I am hoping the MI might be able to tell me.

Hi Annie,

The Mitchell Library has Sighthill Monumental Inscriptions.

I see from your profile that you're in Scotland - would you be able to make a wee trip to Glasgow yourself?

If not, why not add a post requesting a 'Mitchell Library Look-Up'. There's Rootchatters go there all the time so it wouldn't be a big job checking for you. Altenatively, you could always e-mail the library direct and see of they would have a wee look.

If you don't ask, you don't get   ;D

Many thanks for this.  A trip through to Glasgow myself would be great - one of those days.  I'll maybe try the look-ups idea though and see if anyone can do that for me.

Cheers

Many thanks for the offer.

I don't know how these things are sorted - if you check by name or date.  If it is by name, anything on anyone with the surname Dairon is going to be a relative.

If by date,  then all I have are year dates.  Catherine Dairon died in 1928 and her husband Gilbert Fleming are both definitely buried at Sighthill.

However, its Catherine's father and grandfather, both James Dairon, that I am particularly interested in.  I don't have a death date for James senior - I only know it was sometime between 1826 and 1855 but James junior died on 30 November 1891.

Grateful for anything you can find but I realise this is pretty pathetic detail to go on so please do not spend too much time on it.

Cheers

Hi Annie,

Hello Martha Ann,

I realise it's been quite a while since you visited 'Rootschat' and I'm hoping you can still be contacted through the site.

Your name 'Dairon' has stuck with me and yesterday, I found a grave to members of a Dairon Family in Sighthill Cemetery. I don't think it's the one you were actually searching, but as you said, it's such an unusual name, there can't be that many of them.

The following is the MI from the Dairon stone:

In loving memory of JANET HAMILTON, wife of Edward Dairon who died 24th January 1888 aged 39 years
The above EDWARD DAIRON died 1st January 1914 aged 65 years
Their son JOHN HAMILTON died 3rd April 1878 aged 8 months
ISABELLA LINDSAY MONTGOMERY, wife of the above Edward Dairon died 27th July 1933 aged 83 years
JOHN STRACHAN, beloved husband of Helen Dairon died 18th August 1936 aged 69 years

I took a 'close-up' photo of the Lair Number at the base of the stone and it's 8.L.179.

I have no idea what this actually means - it might be Section 8, Row L, Grave 179, or Row 8, Section L, Grave 179  ???

I can't tell you how grateful I am to you for this information.  The grave you have found is my great grandfather and his first and second wives and also the husband of a great aunt.

Many thanks for this.
