Hi Debra,
I've been transcribing for ages and find it quite a rewarding occupation. I am doing 1853 at the moment - handwritten. Most of it is easy to read but if there are words which are difficult there is a handwriting section on freeBMD that you can check. If a word is completely illegible than you just leave it out - they tell you how to do this too, in fact there are loads of instructions on the site.
I have a brilliant co-ordinator who is extremely helpful too.
