Quinn - blind - near 'dogs' racetrack, Glasgow...
« on: Wednesday 15 October 08 12:01 BST (UK) »
...and that's it, well almost.

Just thought I would throw this one onto the forum as you never know what might turn up someday.

Basically, older family members have regularly recalled a 'relative' of my grandfather Lilley visiting him and vice versa, probably during 1940's and 1950's.

Only info each member seems to recall is:

Alex(ander) Quinn
lived near racetrack (dogs?) in Glasgow
he was blind

Realise this is very limited info, but know from experience that Rootschatters do sometimes work miracles! Happy for this to sit on board on off-chance someone ever recognises the vague details.

ps

wondering if this may have been the dogs track:

sorry not much help I know, but I was born and bred in Glasgow and Shawfield Greyhound Stadium as you suggested is the only dog track that I've heard of. It is in the Rutherglen area of Glasgow, which is the south side........but thats all I can tell you I'm afraid.......good luck with your search.

The Glasgow Story Website reports that 4 dog tracks were built in Glasgow in 1928 although by far the most popular was Shawfield (which was slightly outside the city boundary)

A quick search indicates that 2 of these tracks were later used for Speedway
Ashfield Stadium in Possilpark (north side of City) and White City in Kinning Park (near Ibrox football park)
A third track was in Mount Vernon (also south side of City)
The fourth may have been in Auchinleck/Robroyston area in the north side of City.

You should know by now that it's never that easy  ;D

Ashfield and White City were both active right through into the early 60's although I think they may have been mainly Speedway by that time.

Hi there,

I noticed your previous message and other replies. There was another dog racing track in Glasgow in the Esat End of the city. It was called Carntyne Race Track and was situated at the junction of Carntyne Road and Todd Street near Duke Street.
Perhaps this might help?
