Taylor's in Dublin Where to look next
« on: Wednesday 15 October 08 00:18 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am pretty new to the board but I am working on my Taylor family line.  I am getting stuck and wonder if anyone has some idea's on where to look next.  I am trying to find out what happended to the family members and how they ended up in Dublin in the first place.  Here is what I do know.

From FHL films from LDS-

William Taylor (was a solicitor) married Charlotte Bennett on 2 Oct 1851 in Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland  (father of groom.Alfred Taylor - solicitor  father of bride. Charles Bennett - auctioneer)  This was a civil registration but all of their children's Christenings are listed at Eustace Street Presbyterian Church.  I also find it curious that during the time they attended that church the pastor's name was Philip Taylor.

I have Charles Bennett still owning land in Dublin in 1876.  I also have an address on Dame St.   ( I know nothing else about the
Bennett family)

As for William and Alfred they were both Solicitors and I have them owning land on Great Brunswick.

William & Charlotte's Children:

Elizabeth b.1856
William George b. 30 Mar 1857  Dublin,Dublin,Ireland
Charles b. 30 Jul 1858 Dublin,Dublin, Ireland
Augustine b. 6 Nov 1869 Dublin,Dublin,Ireland
Alfred b. 14 Nov 1861 Sanford, Dublin, Ireland
Harriette Charlotte b. 3 May 1863 Dublin, Dublin, Ireland
James Cavendish b. 21 Nov 1864 Rathmines, Dublin, Ireland
Adrian Peregrine b. 7 Apr 1866 Dublin Dublin Ireland
Maud b. 14 Oct 1867  705,Rathmines, Dublin, Ireland

I have both Adrian and James at a (boarding) Grammar School in Taplow in 1881
Then in 1883 Adrian and James sailed from Liverpool to Halifax where Adrian made his way to the US and Illinois.

Adrian was my great great grandfather.

Any guidance would be great!

extract from Slater's directory of Ireland 1846 :

In the solicitor section :
Taylor John, 116 Grafton st
Taylor William, jun. 25 Dame st
Teevan Johnston, 22 Blackball st

Tayle Eliza, clothes dealer, 67 Mary's lane
Taylor Alfred, solicitor, 118 Great Brunswick st
Taylor & Co. land and general agents

as far as I can see the 'jun.' after Williams name refers to the fact that he is a junior.
also listed a few Bennets in Dublin -:

Bennett Bernard, livery-stables, 18 North Brunswick st
Bennett Charles, auctioneer, valuator, and house and
land agent, 14 Dame st; h. Garville avenue, Rathgar
Bennett E, barrister, 98 Lower Mount st
Bennett Frances, teacher of teacherof the piano forte, 11 Leeson st

the h. before the Garville Av. address refers to his residence

edit : Sanford mentioned in your post probably refers to Sandford which is a road/area near to Ranelagh & Rathmines in Dublin. There is also a place named Sandyford - but this is much further out in County Dublin.

Shane,
Thank you so much for your help!  I notice there is a Taylor on Dame as well as Charles Bennett.  I think these families may go back a ways together.

Hi Richard,
I do have a William George Taylor who was born 30 Mar 1857 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland his parents were Chalotte Maria Bennett and William Taylor (I think Charlotte & William died in the 1880s).  My set of Taylors were Presbyterian and I believe they lived either near Rathmines or Rathfarnham.  William and his father Alfred were both Solicters.  I don't know much about the children other than Adrian & his older brother Alfred.  If you think there is a connection to your Taylors please let me know and I will get you the information I have.

Hi Richard,
Sometime back we exchanged messages about the Taylor family.  You had stated that you thought Harriette was your grandmother but needed proof and had a flight to Ireland coming up.  Just wondering if you made the connection.  I am still pretty stumped on what happened to all the Taylor children and getting any information past William and Charlotte.  I just booked my trip to Ireland today so I will be going over in September.  Any tips on research you could pass on?
Thank you,
Ellen

Ellen

Shaw's Directory for 1850 shows the 2 solicitors as being in Gt.Brunswick Street

Slaters Directory for 1894 shows William Taylor resident at No.1 Sandford Terrace,Sandford Road,Ranelagh. This is confirmed by my source work based upon The Irish Times newspaper. The I.T. also show the death of Myra (widow of William Taylor) in 1893 at same address. Revert if these are your people and you want references.

From personal knowledge there was a fruit shop owned by E. Taylor on Sanford Road 1930-C. 1960

Thank you so much for this information.  I would love to have the resources.  I am almost positive this is my Taylor family.  The youngest children of Willam and Charlotte were born in Sandford.  I think Myra is William George Taylor's wife (son of William and Charlotte).  From my research I know that  Alfred Taylor and  his son William Taylor were solicitors located on Great Brunswick.  I will be visiting Ireland next month and am very excited and would love to find my ancestor's gravesites.

Again thank you!
