John Hucklebridge HUETT / Lady Agnes SKINNER
« on: Tuesday 14 October 08 23:01 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I'm keen to find information on:

John Hucklebridge Huett (Born in Taunton, 1820)
Parents:  Robert Huett and Eleanor Hucklebridge

and his wife

Lady Agnes Skinner (born in 1829 , Westminster).
Parents:  James Skinner

This pair emegrated to Tasmania in 1860ish.

I'm very interested to find out more information about them before they came to Tasmania.

John apparently trained as a doctor, and I'd love to find out more info on that.  Also, why Agnes Skinner was known as 'Lady'.

Any advice on where I should start would be wonderful.

Hi

They married in 1852 and she is just shown as Agnes Skinner on the GRO index but he is shown as John Thucklebridge

September qtr 1852 Rochford (Essex) Vol 4A Page 189

1841 has father James in household - a tailor b Ireland

Nothing to justify the title of "Lady so I suspect she may have been given the title as a joke - perhaps she had "airs and graces" (see below)

1841 census for Middlesex

James Skinner 50 - tailor b Ireland
Mary 35
Sarah 15
Agnes 11
William 6
James 4

Living next door at Bute House Kensington M'sex were this family
Viscount and Lady ? Ingestre or suchlike and their 3 children who are all "Hon" plus an assortment of servants and a governess

Wow, you are all so helpful.  Thank you so much.

I think this is my John.  He has a big connection with East Brent.

What is a Governess... and would that explain her 'lady' title?

A governess was a private teacher who mainly taught children in their own homes

if you look at 1851 census -the doctor has his sister working as Governess to his children living in Milton

1851 Agnes was a governess in Milton, too - maybe that's how she met John??

1841 Census John is down as JONE Huett, 15, Male Servant, not born in County.
Living in the Household of Wm Acton a Surgeon in George St, St George Hanover Square, Middlesex.
HO107/733/2/St George Hanover Square

I am confused as to why John is younger on both Census than his Christening on Family Trees.

Marriage;
30 March 1816, St Mary the Virgin, Eat Brent, Somerset
Robert HUETT, Bachelor
Eleanor HUCKLEBRIDGE, Spinster
Witnesses Charles Hucklebridge/William Ham
Eleanor signs with a X

Christenings;
HUETT, Parents ROBERT/ELEANOR, same Church;
ELIZABETH 03 Nov 1816
JAMES 21 June 1818
To JOHN/ELEANOR;
JOHN 25 May 1820***

All have Fathers Occp as Farmer, abode East Brent

Use the soundex option as name is Hewitt/Huett/Huitt etc
