Hi Anne-Marie,

I have to admit I looked for a marriage entry for Mr Spitty and Elizabeth Ellen without result...
Hopefully the 1861 entry that Mum44 found is the right one.

I have a similar ancestor (also called Elizabeth  ;D) I'm trying to find out about and it's funny how the imagination starts running wild - I thought of her as a 'lady of the night' and even had her as a possible unknown victim of the Ripper at one point!  :o She vanished completely after a messy divorce in 1881... from Bethnal Green, Whitechapel or thereabouts! I will never stop searching for her though as I would be interested in finding out what actually happened to her after the divorce!

Best of luck with your hunt!

Thanks Ninakin

What really throws me with my Elizabeth is that she and Charles Spitty went as far as to have the banns read but never went through with the marriage.  This was shortly before her appearance on the 1881 census as Mrs Spitty. The church the banns were read in was a fair distance from Elmley where she was living at the time of the census.  I know she stayed with Charles as he is the father of her child born 1882.

Your Elizabeth sounds equally fascinating and frustrating :D.  Good luck with your search and maybe one day we will both learn a little more about our respective Elizabeths ;D
