What happened to Elizabeth
« on: Tuesday 14 October 08 16:51 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am writing up my family history and would really appreciate the opinion of others please.

My relative, Elizabeth Ellen Fullagar was born on 1st August 1852 and her mother died on 23rd August 1852.  What I am interested in is people's opinion in what could have happened to her.

Her father didn't remarry at all and I can't find any record of her in the local workhouse.  Unfortunately I cannot find her or her younger brother in the 1861 census (If anyone wants to have a look - Elizabeth Ellen Fullagar born Frinsted, Kent and John Fullagar 1842 also born in Frinsted - but I'm quite sure they aren't there)

Her father was living in a Beerhouse in Maidstone with her older brother in 1861 but no sign of Elizabeth or John.   Whilst she may have become estranged from her family in early life, she lived with her brother in later years.

I'm just interested in what could have become of her - I'm not aware of any close relatives that could have taken her in.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi -

this may well be sheer co-incidence (which I don't entirely believe in  :D )
but there are the following:

John Fullagar age 22 :  Bredhurst  RG9.  P. 504  Fol.  55  Pg. 4

Ellen E Fullagar  age 10 :  Bredhurst  RG9.  P. 504  Fol. 54  Pg. 1
Census information is Crown Copyright from TNA.
Titchfield, Hampshire: Reed,  Fielder, Cawte, Goddard.
Kent:  Float,  Cutbush.
Wallasey, Cheshire: Carroll, Ledsham.
Liverpool : Horsfall, Prescott

Hi Mum ;D

I'm not a great believer in coincidences either and these two look very promising.  Bredhurst isnt that far from Frinsted and its very likely these are my missing people.  Just need to try and make a connection with the people they appear to be living with.

Can't believe I missed these two :D

Twiglets - thanks for the Genes link - I have been in contact with both of these people and they very distantly related to Elizabeth and have not been able to help.

Thank you both for your help

Hi

have you tried looking up any Neighbor's who lived near your Fullagar's, you also might want to look up the term cluster genealogy, as you may find it to be a very useful tool with finding out who were neighbor's around the area which your ancestor's lived.

Sometimes Neighbor's were relatives, which is why i mentioned the term Cluster Genealogy.

I wonder, are you looking for her in later censuses? 1881: Found Elizabeth Spitty, 28, wife, born Frinsted, wife of Charles Spitty, 37, Lodger with James Fullager and family in Elmley, Kent.

Hi Ninakin

Thats her. :D  I have found her in every other census except the 1861 (which Mum44 may well have now found) and the 1891.

Although she was using the name Spitty, she never actually married Mr Spitty and on the different records I have found, she seems to alternate between the names Spitty and Fullagar.  She also seems to do the same with her children's surname.

Elizabeth seemed to spend her life in and out of the workhouse and appears to have had 7 children by a variety of different fathers.  I have managed to trace most of her children and several of them appear to have put as many miles between themselves and their mother and even went as far as changed the spelling of their surname.

I do wonder what sort of life she led and did wonder if she was actually a 'lady of the night' :o at one time!!  (still think she could be)

I am just trying to get a feel for her early years and see if I can find any reason to explain why she led the kind of life she did.

Thanks for your interest
