Phillips help please
« on: Tuesday 14 October 08 00:02 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help please with information about this Phillips family please.

Robert Phillips baptised 16 Jul 1820 (born April 1816) in Alverstoke, son of Fysher & Elizabeth Phillips. I am told there was a brother Fysher baptised the same day

I am looking for a Robert Phillips born abt. 1819 to 1820 born Hants. England, Found with a Shepard family in 1851 Loch Arkaig, a visitor to a family aged 30 years a shoemaker, who eventually married in Fort William in 1856.

His father was also a Robert (possibly Fysher?) Phillips listed on his sons marriage cert. as a ships carpenter, Mother, Elizabeth Negus.

Hi

I'm a bit confused

If the 1856 marriage cert shows his father as Robert and the 1851 census shows his birthyear as 1821 - what is the connection to the IGI entry with an 1816 birthyear and a father called Fysher?

How old was he on his marriage cert

I think you mean that the head of household was by occupation a shepherd - not that the family surname was Shepherd

This was the 1851 address

Inverhermoh Glendearg - Inverness

Robert Phillips 30 b Hunter England shoemaker

The 1851 image is not available for viewing on Ancestry so I can't check the transcription of his birthplace.

Does his marriage cert show his birthplace as Hampshire as "Hunter" could possibly refer to Huntingdonshire

Hello Carolew,

Thank-you very much for your reply, and the information you have provided, it is much appreciated, I will try to answer your questions in order you posted.

Robert Phillips age listed at/on his marriage was 36 years in 1856. His father is listed as Robert Phillips, however, I have done a little research down this path at an earlier date, please see the link below....

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,121874.0.html

Yes, you are correct the head of the house hold's occupation was listed as a shepard, I had not seen the reference to 'hunter' before. There is only one listing to Robert Phillips birth place and it stated Hants.

I think this answers all your questions in post one and two, and hopefully the link above will answer your post number three.

I have no records to indicate Robert Phillips father was in fact Fysher, but was hoping, it could be a nick name, or some information might be available to see if anything ties in with information I have already, Thank-you for helping Carolew

Hello,

After you mentioned the 'Hunts' I had to go check through my records to see if the birthplace listed might have been Hunts, and not Hants. However, it seems to be Hants.

I have looked into the Phillips family in Portsea, and it was suggested there was a Fysher Phillips that had a son Robert Phillips in the Alverstoke area of Portsmouth, and thought this avanue must be worth a look see.

Hi

I checked Robert out on the 1861/71/81 censuses and one thing struck me straight away - you say he married in 1856 but the 1861 for Argyll has a 12 year old son Albert b 1849 in Inverness and a 6yr old Elizabeth b Argyll.

In your link above - you list the 1861 household but show Albert as Alexander and in 1871 as Robert aged 22.  I am assuming you have viewed the actual 1861/71 images as Robert is transcribed by Ancestry as 33 in 1871

Does the marriage cert show a previous marriage for Elizabeth as the Robert Phillips shown on the 1851 was single at that time

Also - Robert was a shoemaker in 1851 which is usually an occupation "for life".  I realise there are exceptions but in 1861 and on subsequent censuses he is a farm labourer/labourer

Have you viewed the 1851 image on Scotlands People to confirm that the birthplace of "Hunter" transcribed is actually Hants as all other census entries just show England" as his birthplace

Son John would appear to be the eldest following an 1856 marriage

Father:  ROBERT PHILLIPS   Mother:  ELIZABETH MC PHERSON

There are two Robert Phillips here, one with a father Robert, baptised 11 Jul 1819, mother Elizabeth and the other with a father named Fysher baptised 16 Jul 1820,  mother named Elizabeth.  This Robert was born in 1816 and yes, a sibling Fysher was baptised on 16 Jul 1820.

But I cannot find any other baptisms nor a marriage for Fysher & Elizabeth.  Elizabeth Negus produces nothing.  There is a burial for a 1 year old child - Fisher Philip Phillips in 1833 in Alverstoke.

Robert baptised in 1819 seems to be with his parents in 1841 in Portsmouth, listed as a blacksmith.  I don't see an entry for a Fysher Phillips.  :-\
