Hay House, Broadclyst and St John the Baptist - WERE and HAY WEBB
« on: Monday 13 October 08 22:26 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to the Parish registers of St John the Baptist, Broadclyst?

I understand that this was the Parish church of the WERE family who had Hay House, Broadclyst from (at least) 1851 until 1939, perhaps longer.

Did the following marriage occur there - at the Church or the House - on June 9, 1885 between Lucy Kennet WERE and Charles Robert HAY WEBB?

Hay House was also the residence of Charles HAY WEBB and family when they were not in India.  It is now a Nursing Home - does anyone know when this change occurred?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!

On the FreeBMD website found the following marriage:

Second Quarter 1885
WERE Lucy Kennet to WEBB Charles Robert H - Yeovil - Vol 5C - Page 774.

Yeovil is in Somerset.
Broadclyst is in Devon.

Birth registration:
Second Quarter 1860
WERE Lucy Kennet - Holborn - Vol 5B - Page 446.

If you Google "Hay House, Broadclyst" you will come up with some very interesting information particularly about WW1 Memorial which lists the Hay-Webbs.

Ditto "St John the Baptist Church, Broadclyst".

Hope this information will prove useful.

Thanks Priscilla,

My original information from The Times [London] stated only that they were married in the parish church - hence reasonable to assume it was at Broadclyst even though the registration was made at Yeovil.  I have since found that the marriage between Charles HAY WEBB and Lucy Kennet WERE took place in St Andrew, Stoke under Hamdon in Somerset - hence the registration in the District of Yeovil.

I have all references to the HAY WEBB family available on the net and know quite a bit about the HAY WEBB children.

My original questions still stand in relation to Hay House Nursing Home and the Parish registers of St John the Baptist, Broadclyst as there will be many WERE events recorded in the latter as well as a possible HAY WEBB.  I am looking for the death of Charles Robert HAY WEBB sometime between 1917 and 1943 and thought to start in Broadclyst - it may be that he died in India, but I have to start the process of elimination somewhere.

Hello; I am new to this site and am a neighbour to Hay House.  I am trying to do research on the history of this house.  If you are still keen to know more, get in touch.

Hi Hilary,

I AM still interested in Hay House and am presently in UK for 3 months, so there may be a chance of getting together?  I'm not sure whether you can yet post/receive a Private Message until you have posted so many queries.  If you can check this out and send me a PM with your email we can then correspond directly if you prefer?  Jill Statton.

Hello - what a superb co-incidence!
It always advises us not to put our e-mail addresses on a website like this as the world would see it including the unpleasant fraternity.
If you are able to think of a safe way we can arrange to meet, let me know as I am very keen.
Regards
H

Please see Genuki Devon which has a link to burials which you can check out online see http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Broadclyst/index.html  and http://www.devonheritage.org/FrameMain_ParishRecords.htm
Genuki also mentions some publications on the history of the church.

As far as I know the church registers are on microfiche at the Devon Research Centre [DRO] at Great Moor House, Bittern Road, Sowton, Exeter, about 3 miles east of the city centre. You would possibly be able to visit during your time in Devon otherwise you should employ a researcher. [The Devon FHS can provide a list of members willing to undertake research].
