Help to identify regiment please
« on: Monday 13 October 08 16:58 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help me identify my Grandfather's regiment? Hopefully I have attached a photo (and also a close up of his cap badge in case that helps) There is a date in pencil on the back of the photo, 1915/16. I am not sure how accurate that is though.

His name was Robert Henry Glen Howard, born 1899 in Bakewell, Derbyshire. Fingers crossed that some kind person can help with identifying his regiment and pointing me in the right direction to finding  his WWI service record and any medals gained.

Many thanks

Do you know if he was a casualty? If so this could be him.
Theatre of entry is Balkans so could have been Gallipoli Vet.

Wow, that was quick! I went offline to cook dinner and the answers were waiting for me when I got back. Thankyou everyone for the speedy regiment identification, I'm so grateful.

I know that my next step is to discover his service/regiment number but I'm a bit in the dark on how to go about this. I assume I need that number to see if his war service records have survived? Any info on where to look would be most appreciated.

Ady, thanks for your help. You asked whether my Grandfather was a casualty? In the right hand column of that image it says Died - does this mean killed in action? If so then this is not the right man as my Grandfather survived the war. Could you please tell me where you found the record anyway so that I can look for other possible Robert Howards?

Many thanks

Hi Muvva
I searched on the Medal Index Cards for a Robert Howard Wiltshire Regiment...On ancestry and the NA site..This was the only Robert in the listings however he died at Gallipoli so its not your man...He may have gone overseas with a different regiment or his card is lost which would explain no MIC.
Its a great picture though! Have you any others that may confirm Regiment?

Theres a number of Robert H Howards and a couple of Robert G Howard but no RHG Howard!
on about pages 13 onwards of the search of 143 Robert Howards that went overseas on the NA Documents online Medal Index Cards

Morning Ady,
Thanks so much for taking the time to look for the medal card. As far as I remember, Grandfather seemed to discount the Henry part of his name, he always used R.G. as his initials. I didn't know about the Henry bit until I bought a copy of his birth certificate! This morning I checked the National Archive site but the most likely results seem to be the two Robert G Howards on Ancestry. As my sub has run out and winter fuel bills are taking priority over renewing it, I can't see much info other than name and regiment. But for now I am so happy to at least have found out which regiment he served in, so thanks again for that.

Yes, it's a great photo isn't it? The original is quite large but very fragile. One of the corners was badly creased but my clever daughter managed to work some computer magic on it and it looks wonderful now. Sadly, it is the only one I have of my Grandfather in uniform.

Thanks again for all your  help

The Army Service Corps lad served overseas in 1915 probably Gallipoli and definately survived.
The Queens lad served overseas after  jan 1916.

Unfortunately cannot find a Wiltshire link on the cards. The Army Service Corps lad finished as a Sergeant the other lad a Private.
If you had access to any medals his number would be engraved on the Rim.
