Davison Family, Huron Cty., Ontario
« on: Sunday 12 October 08 18:20 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am hoping someone can help me find a member of the Davison family of Stanley, Ont. area, circa 1800's.

James Davison and Jane Rowat had a son;

James Davison, b.abt.1816, Stanley, Ont. who married ..
Nancy Greer, (b.abt.1820, Twp. of Howick) Oct.23,1848, by Rev. Thomas G. Thomson, the Methodist Church,  Brucefield, Ont.
I believe they farmed in Twp. of Howick.

My main thrust in this query is to determine if anyone knows where Nancy was born, her nationality and any information about her parents, John Greer and Laura Fields.

James Davison/Jane Rowat and John Greer/Laura Fields are my gr.gr.gr.gr.grandparents.

I realize this is a stretch, trying to go back so far, but hopefully someone out there is looking too.
warm regards and thanks in advance,
Sharron

Have you tried tracing the family in Canadian census records?
1881 census at www.familysearch.org
1901,1906,1911 at www.automatedgenealogy.com

:D well, this makes more sense, as I found one of her sisters born in 1854, and I thought it might be a stretch in ages...

Thank you both !
I looked up that date again and it looks like the marriage of James and Nancy was 1878.
The fancy script fooled ... the 7 look a 4 ... my mistake ... now it makes more sense.
Thanks,
Sharron

No problem, stuff happens...so if you have any more questions re: the family, just add to this thread....
must be the same fellow who wrote on a document I saw recently....as the seven's top stroke had
an upstroke left to make it look more like a 4...

Hi Sharon,

Just for clarification, that I think the others have picked up on, the Stanley you want is Stanley Twp and not city. There is a Stanley, Ontario which is a village just north west of Thunder Bay, ON.. Glad you are getting info you are looking for.

Sharon, you seem to need more information on the older generations, so don't be afraid to ask...
Unfortunately Huron / Stanley isn't available for 1851 census... :-\ but there is lots of fabulous help in
Ontario & they'll best to look for more for you
Here is Sharon's other thread with more information & a question on aboriginal ancestry. In Manitoba
we can search scrip...I suppose the 1851 would have shown race, but only if declared...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,299843.0.html
With Scots in the family, there may have been some earlier settlers from the Ontario fur trade with
wives / country wives who were aboriginal... ( The term for partial aboriginal/native is now "metis")
