Have found lots of data and our Jenn -tropicalj found the important shipping records ....under BARRETT  ::) and independently found similar info back to the 1861 census.

I have pm'd a lot of info to SellickAust as I wasn't sure whether or not I had found the correct family...but Jenn's passenger record find has me fairly convinced so will detail here...I did work backwards but have detailed in chronological order.

I have tracked the family using Vic bdm's, IGI extracted parish records only, free bdm, Ancestry for census and electoral rolls; and cemetery records.  I will place the info in chronological order...

Marriage
BARRATT John William Smith

Births

BARRATT John
Father  John William Smith
Mother  Jane  ASHFORD
Birth 30 Nov 1835

There is info on IGI for a number of chn to this couple

BARRATT John  30   Hairdresser   Not born in  county
BARRATT Jane  30  Burnisher   Born in county

Ages are rounded down to nearest r years and in I have found my ancestors' ages incorrect up to 10 years.

BARRATT ? Joseph/Jack  Son  1  b. Warwickshire, Birmingham
ASHFORD John  Brother in law  Unm  49  Labourer  b. Warwickshire, Birmingham

I cannot find a married for John b. 1835 to a Rosanah [may not be her correct name or perhaps a nickname.  There is one page that comes up with only a John BARRATT...and no wife named....the page with her name has not been transcribed.

Robert Albert is my wifes grandfather, Dorothy died in 2002 so the name difference would see to be a different person

But thank you for the information, it will help greatly with sorting out the mists of time

I know this is an old thread but I had to add my 2 cents worth. Dorothy and Raymond (Dot and Ray) were related to me - Ray was my grandmother's brother and I believe the last survivor from their family. My grandmother was Ivy Ethel. I remember meeting Ray quite a fewtimes but wouldn't say I knew him all that well - my mother did though. Ivy died in 1997 and another brother Clarence (Uncle Clarry or 'Clacker' as he was known) lived for many years in Brisbane and died perhaps in the past 10 years. I believe Hazel died at a late age but I'm not sure exactly when.

One of the brothers died in a horse & cart accident sometime around 1920 - can't recall which one but must be George if Percival's war records are correct. It had a big effect on the family, as you might imagine. My mother has a couple of medical books given as a gift to 'George', but I'm not sure if it was their father or grandfather, in 1903 when he left for the Dandenongs to follow a religious calling. George Grosvenor had a property in Olinda, which is no longer standing but has a road named after it, so perhaps it was him

The family were raised in Crockford St Port Melbourne. (Google '48 crockford st port melbourne' and on Google Maps Streetview you'll see a row of single storey Victorian homes - I'm pretty sure it's one of those as I once saw a very old photo with the family standing out the front).

That's all I have for now. Good luck...
