Columbia Rd E2, help to identify shop owners
« on: Saturday 11 October 08 18:43 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
I wonder if anyone can help with this one, do you have the business directories or resources.
The enclosed picture must be one of my ancestors, it is 110 Columbia Rd E2,
the picture was taken before WW2 (i am told).
The lady in the picture is a Florence Clover nee Murphy b1906 London East, her husband was Charles Stephen Clover b1904 Bow.
I don't know if they owned it or just worked in it, but it must have belonged to someone in the clover family.
Can a census look up be done by address, any help would be most appreciated.
Many thanks,
Peter.

At present the last census open to public inspection is the 1901 census, three years before Charles Stephen Clover was born.

Births Jun 1904
Clover  Charles Stephen     Poplar  1c 529

On the 1901 census this family was in Bow (registration district Poplar). The father's name was Stephen.

1901 census RG13 340 folio 145
54 Usher Road St Mary Stratford by Bow
Stephen Clover 32 Head Married Carman Bryant and Mays Canningtown London
Emily Clover 32 Wife Married Canningtown London
William Clover 10 Son Canningtown London
Bertie Clover 8 Son Bow London
Frederick Clover 6 Son Bow London
Herbert Clover 4 Son Bow London
Lily V Clover 18 months Daughter Bow London

but you would really need Charles Stephen's birth certificate to confirm whether this is his family.  There were other Clover families in Bromley.

According to Google maps the Columbia Road which still exists in the East End is in Shoreditch.

You can do address lookups for the 1901 census on the official 1901 census website

http://www.1901censusonline.com/

an image search on Google images brings up plenty of pictures of Columbia Road

You can access some historical directories online here, but only up to the 1910s

Hello Peter,  In 1901 110 Coumbia Road was a coffee House and was run by a George Elledge who lived and worked there with his family.

Hello Jennifer,
Thank you kindly for the information, it's a start for me and something to go on, may have been owned by the Clover's a little later late 30s say.
Thank again, best wishes.

Hello all,
Would anyone know if kelly's directories would have the information, we would like to see if the shop was in the Clover family.
The lady in the pic is Florence Clover nee Murphy, and her husband was Charles Stephen Clover, they both worked in the shop.
Trying to ascertain who owned it the circa would be before the war around 1937-8, does anyone have directories.
Kind regards,
Peter.

Hi Peter,
Cannot see the photo, so not sure if this is any help, but in 1949 there was a Clover Furnishing Company at 9 Mansford Street, E2. Could they have moved due to the war?
Best wishes, haliared.
