Eliza/Elijah Lilley born 1856 Kimbolton, Hunts
« on: Saturday 11 October 08 16:33 BST (UK) »
The above person I am looking for is either daughter/son to John Lilley born 1815 Bedford to Ruth Wagstaff born about 1814 Kimbolton, Hunts.

On the 1861 census the name is Eliza, on the 1871, 1881, it is Elijah married to Mary A on 1881.  Cannot find this person on 1891.  Or is this mix up 2 different families.

Also I am looking for the parents of Ruth Wagstaff born at Kimbolton.  I know I will have to put a message on the Bedford site for John Lilley for his parents.

I hope someone would be able me please.

Regards

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

Do you have access to 1891? The reference is RG12/1243 35 1

They are still around in 1901: RG13/1469 7 5

Shout if you need transcriptions

re John Lilley born c1815. Why not check out the IGI at www.familysearch.org yourself, rather than posting a request on the Beds board? There are two John Lilleys born in Bedford - one in 1814, one in 1816

Hi David

I looked at those on the IGI, but its just knowing which one was married to Ruth Wagstaff.  I am wondering whether he was married before Ruth in 1844.

I doubt it as he appears to be single in 1841 living in Kimbolton. If you have access to censuses check 1841 for Lilley in Kimbolton. Using that in conjunction with the IGI it's fairly apparent who his parents are - see post on Beds board

There are burials in Kimbolton of Leah Wagstaffe Lilley aged 4 on 30 Jul 1850 and of William Robert N Lilley aged 1+ on 13 Aug 1850.

If you check freebmd on http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl in St Neots registration district you'll find a number of entries for Lilley/Lilly.

Kimbolton parish register for this period isn't on the IGI or BVRI, nor is a transcript available from Hunts FHS. However the BTs have been filmed by the LDS so are available to order and view at your nearest LDS Family History Centre - list of Centres is on www.familysearch.org

The first Wagstaffe marriage in Kimbolton after 1754 wasn't until 1823 so I can't even manage an educated guess as to who Ruth's parents might have been.

Thank you for that information David.  I have John Lilley working for a William Lee on the 1841 census in Kimbolton.

But have you also got the other John Lilley and his children in Kimbolton? These appear to be John's father and siblings. Most of them seem to be tailors, like John. Like John they were baptised in Bedford, sons of John and Eleanor, per the IGI, extracted so reliable.  The death of Eleanor is on freebmd in the Dec quarter 1838 in St Neots registration district, which included Kimbolton.

Hi David

Thanks for that I have checked that out and I have added them to my trees.  Do you think that on the my original message Eliza was mistaken for Elijah, as when you go on the census ten years later the age is correct and its down as Elijah.

Happy Tree Hunting
