1901 Census Look-up Samuel Southern
« on: Saturday 11 October 08 14:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Hoping someone can help, ???

I'm looking for Samuel Southern on the 1901 Census and then hopefully his birth also.  All I have is his marriage Certificate.

He married Mary Jane Doherty in 1926 age 27. So he should be around two on the 1901 census. The marriage was in a register office in Beswick, Manchester.  I don't know if Samuel had lived in Manchester all his life or not. I don't know if he had any siblings at this stage, or what his mother's name might have been.

His father is listed as Samuel Southern (deceased) on the marriage certificate and occupation - Foreman in Coal Mine

Thanks
Cunningham, Doherty, Southern, Holt, Wesner, Threlfall, Grant, Robinson, Johnstone, Lawton.

This is a bit tricky not knowing his birth place

The only only which jumps out with the information you have is this

1901

1 Willow Street Bradford with Beswick, North Manchester

Lodging with the Alexander Wood and family we have

Mary E Southern Wid 26 Charwoman born Lucknow India British subject
Samuel son 1 born Ardwick Lancashire

 RG13/ 3762 Folio 146 Page 27.

I'll see if I can see a death for a Samuel Southern which may fit

A possibility but can't prove it

Samuel Southern
Death registered qrt ending Mar 1900
Manchester

225

Born 1861 so he would have been 39 in 1900 - - wee bit older than Mary if this is him

Unfortunately I can't find a Mary E Farley marrying anyone anywhere in England/Wales from 1891 to 1900

There isn't a Mary E Farley on the 1901 so either they didn't marry or I am on the wrong track entirely

This looks as though it is the birth cert of the young Samuel on the 1901 as Ardwick registers in Chorlton.
If nothing else turns up you could always send for the birth cert and specify that the father has to be Samuel Southern

Samuel Southern
Birth registered qrt ending June 1899
Chorlton
Vol 8c

I have checked this birth on the online Lancashire bmd's and the mother's maiden name isn't given :(

I'm really sorry I can't be more helpful

Thanks  for you help Tricia,

I think i might just send for this Birth Certificate and hope for the best.

My Gran didn't know her Father - Samuel Southern 2nd. She didn't even know his name, so it has taken me a while to pull together the pieces.  I couldn't believe i found the marriage of Samuel and Mary Jane, as we all guessed they never married.  I had looked many times before without luck, so couldn't believe it when i came acrossn the marriage a few weeks ago.

Looks like he escapes my grasp again though.  Mary E looked really promising. Do you think it is possible she would have taken the Southern name even if they didn't marry?

She could do whatever she wanted - nothing to stop her in those days. Probably better than people knowing that her son was illegitimate.Lots of things were covered up.

I hope the birth certificate has clues for you - could be interesting

Good luck, Tricia
