1861 or 1871 Look Up in Wigan Please
« on: Monday 31 January 05 21:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am looking for an Alice Smith (I know  :-\ horrible SMITH family).  I have the 1851 Census for her and her family.  They lived in 1851 in Standish Gate.

The family should be listed like this

Edward Smith (don't know his age) Butcher possibly a travelling butcher as he is never in the house with the family
Margaret or Peggy Smith born 1807
Ann Smith  1830/32
Alexander Smith 1836
Mary Smith 1836/38
Alice Smith  1841

All should be born in Lancashire.  I don't know anything more until Alice married Adam Best in Ormskirk in 1878.  Then I have her till her death.

Any help would be most greatfully received.

Regards
Bev

Hi Wendy,

I was surprised to see the Census details as Shrop's is not a place I have found this family in?

Having said that however this lady only had two children, a son before she married my great grandfather and my great gran.  The child Alice had is listed as being  born in Liverpool but I have not been able to find the birth.  This child was born in 1872, so I would be interested to know the other people in the house as it may provide some information on who could be the possible father of this child.

Thank you
Bev

Hello Wendy,

Thank you for that.  I do note that the head of the house Robert Almond is born in Standish so there is a connection with Alice.  However can I ask why it lists him as Brother-in-Law?

Thanks
Bev

Hi

My fault I should have rearranged them as they appear on the census image and not on transcription page

Luke is head of the house and then Robert Almond is listed as brother in law to the head of the house.
The column heading is Relation to head of house.  I also note that Luke wife was also born is Standish.

Question, questions.

Wendy
