Gaughan/Munnelly - Belmullet
« on: Friday 10 October 08 23:05 BST (UK) »
Anyone related to the Gaughan's from Belmullet?  Peter Gaughan (born about 1845) married Mary Munnelly (born about 1847).  They left Shraigh, Belmullet, County Mayo during the Free Emigration of 1883.

They and their three sons, Michael, Peter and James, travelled on board the SS Nestorian to Boston, MA.  They settled in Scranton Area, Pennsylvania.

Trying to find out the parentage of both Peter Gaughan and Mary Munnelly.

If they married in Ireland the marriage certificate should list their fathers' names and occupations as well as residences of bride and groom at time of marriage.
Might also be details of both parents on death certificates- depending on when and where Peter and Mary died and depending on how much the infrmant(s) knew when registering the deaths.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

No problem Trish -   I can understand their policy!  Anyhow  I thnk theres a possbility that your gg grandfather Peter Gaughan may have been a brother of my g grandfather John Gaughan also from Shraigh - their father was also Peter. Have you come any records of an Anthony Gaughan  (born approx 1889) -n Scranton area there at any stage after 1920 - possibly a nephew of your Peter Gaughan-  wondering if he went there to visit there or stay wth family at any stage - he was in NY n 1920. Are there any Gaughan descendants of Peter Gaughan there in Scranton area today?

Received marriage record for Peter Gaughan and Mary Munnelly.  Peter was from Shraigh and his father's name was Austin Gaughan.  Mary was from Tallaghan and her father's name was Michael Munnelly.  They were married 15 Feb 1868 in Belmullet chapel (RC).

Anyone related?

I am very interested in the information that you posted.  I also have a marriage record from the Belmullet RC church for Michael Munnelly and Catherine Padden dated 6 Oct 1858 and a baptismal record for Francis Munnelly dated November 1862 with sponsors Patrick and Mary Munnelly.

Michael and Catherine were my gg-grandparents.  They emigrated to the Pennsylvania coal mining country (SW of Scranton) in 1863-64.  Francis is my great-grandfather.  There are several of us in the US researching this surname.  I would like to talk further with you if possible.

Not sure if it is relevant, but Frank in my previous message married Annie McGrew in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in 1886.  Annie's mother was Ellen Gaughan.  I do not know anything more about Ellen's family, but she is listed as Irish in the census records.

Many times immigrants from the same place in Ireland lived together in the same villages in Pennsylvania.

Hi Marianne -

You and I have crossed paths before, I think.

My Mary Munnelly was born about 1847.  According to her church marriage record, she was from Tallaghan and her father's name was Michael Munnelly.  I don't know her mother's name.  (Although, I am currently searching the name Eleanor or Nellie Reap as a possibility)

In some hand written notes from a relative, now deceased, the siblings of Mary Munnelly were Rose, Kate, Michael, Patrick and Dennis.
