I have DAVID AYLING, born 1750 at Alton, died 1828 at Alton, wed ELIZABETH WINKWORTH, 1746 - 1828, at

Alton in 1770.

BUT, I have nothing on David's parents. As I have Aylings in both my paternal and maternal lines, I am quite keen

to find out if they have common ancestors.

So, if I could ask someone to please do a look-up for me, they could help resolve this question.

I think this is the point at which my Aunt abandoned the project because she feared she might have uncovered a

skeleton or two. However, I would like to know the truth.

Why do you think that he was b Alton when there is no baptismal record?
Does the age-at-death correspond with that year of birth?
What names witnessed the 1770 marriage?

No, neither, The details I have are from my Aunts papers, unfortunately she is no longer alive so I cannot quizz her
about it.

The sensible thing to do would be to check each of her sources.
If she hasn't given a source, the you are going to have to go looking for one.

Otherwise you are going to be creating a work of fiction.

My late Aunt was not interested in computers, would not have used one for her genealogy.

She would never have trusted third-party transcripts.

I understand that she gained her information by purchasing photofiche of the original

Parish Registers from the various District Archives. Unfortunately, these were all lost during

her house clearance. Having said that, I have no reason to think she was a liar.

You asked about the marriage of David Ayling in Alton. Although he and Elizabeth were said to both be ‘of this parish’ in 1770, David does not seem to have been baptised there. Presumably he was just working there at that time. The Petersfield connection could be because of the settlement certificate but that shows that the family were from Alton and they do not seem to have stayed there long. Yours Jane

1770   24 Sep., David Ayling married Elizabeth Winkworth at Alton by banns. Both were said to be ‘of this parish’. Witnesses were Thomas and Ann Swain.

1771   probable baptism of Sarah Ayling, daughter of David and Elizabeth but there are lots of missing entries from the Alton registers at this time.
1774   James Ayling, son of David and Elizabeth, baptised at Alton. (Reg)

1777   8 Apr., Jesse Ayling buried at Petersfield.

1779   settlement certificate among the Petersfield Parish records for David Ailing, turner, his wife Elizabeth and children Sarah aged 8 and Jane [sic] aged 5 of Alton. (108M70/PO12) Presumably James was misheard as Jane.

1782   11 Oct., George, son of David and Elizabeth Ayling, baptised at Alton. (Reg) The family had returned (or had been returned) to Alton.

1828   12 Aug., Daviid Ayling buried in Alton. Said to be aged 78.
[This suggests that he was born in 1750 but that would have made him underage when he married and that does not appear to have been the case so he was probably born pre-1750.]

1828   6 June, Mary Ayling buried aged 45
1829   1 Mar., Mary Ayling buried aged 53.
1831   4 July, George buried aged 48.
1832   1 Oct., William Ayling buried aged 26.

I too and derived from Ayling stock (Jesse had a brother called Joseph - born Alton 1819 or 1820 - who is my great-great-great-grandfather) and this information has allowed me to go back two further generations to David and Elizabeth. Many thanks and keep posting your discoveries!
