Caleb Farnaby (1802/03)
« on: Friday 10 October 08 10:05 BST (UK) »
The task of tracing my family would be greatly enhanced if I could trace the parents of Caleb Farnaby, who was born in 1802/03, in the North Yorkshire village of CLAXTON, which is part of the parish of Bossall. (Between Sheriff Hutton and Scrayingham)

In the IGI index, Caleb was married on the 12 Dec 1826, at Sheriff Hutton, to Jane Suggitt

Visible in the 1841 census. Household head aged 35 years (bearing in mind that ages were rounded up) and a Castrator, living in Sheriff Hutton with his family - Birth place given as Yorkshire

Visible in the 1851 census, aged 48 years. Born in Claxton and living in Sheriff Hutton with his family

Visible in the 1861 census as the household head and Castrator, living in Sheriff Hutton aged 58; birthplace clearly shown as Claxton

Visible in the 1871 census. Living in Sheriff Hutton (widower) aged 68, A Master Castrator. Caleb's birthplace is given as Sheriff Hutton.

Death record seen at Borthwick Institute, Registered in Malton area in September 1874, and aged 71 years. Death record is also visible in FreeBMD

I have checked births in Parish Registers and Bishop's Transcripts from 1790 - 1810 at the Borthwick Institute for:

Bossall/Claxton (includes Sand Hutton, Harton and Floxton)

I have also checked the Parish Records of the following surrounding Parishes:

Sand Hutton
Sheriff Hutton
Scrayingham (including Howsham and Leppington)
Upper Helmsley
Crambe (including Barton le Willows, Spittle Bridge Inn and Whitwell on the Hill)
Stockton on the Forest
Strensall
Bulmer (including Welburn)
Westow
Skirpenbeck

And can find no trace of the birth

1.   Should I assume that this birth was not recorded and cannot be found?
2.   Could I get any benefits from joining the likes of Ancestry?
3.   Can anyone suggest any other places/avenues that I can explore?

Pat,

There is a researcher on Ancestry who has Caleb in his tree but the only additional information is that his father's name is also given as Caleb.

This researcher has a second marriage for Caleb to Jayne SENNELL nee BOYES on 11 Sep 1871 at Malton Registry Office,Yorks.  The researchers main interest appears to be the SENNELL line - Jayne was the widow of George SENNELL.

I had a quick look for any other Caleb's on the census that may be his father but without luck.

Did you look-up Caleb and Jane's marriage from 1826 when you were at the Borthwick.  If the marriage was by licence there is sometimes additional information to be found there?

All the best

Pinetree
