Grabhold of the nearest large piece of furnture or building feature and shout "EARTHQUAKE"

My ploy with the dreaded reel is (every time) to smile sweetly, look thoroughly confused - not difficult - and say, 'I wonder if you'd mind showing me, only it's the first time I've used one of these'.

Have had the microfiches every which way, most embarrasing was at the NYRO when I wanted a printout from one, finally getting my head around how to use the machine when the film snapped!
Oooops! The chap was very nice about it, he said it had broken before around the same place.  Then when I was at Middlesbrough I tried to rewind a film on a very user-unfriendly machine and I pulled a bit off the machine! Again, the lady who came to fix it was very nice and said that it was always happening. Glad to know it's not just me being an idiot!
