Samuel Hill

Can anybody help. I am looking for the family of Samuel Hill. He was born in Ramsgate or Gravesend around 1869 and in the census of 1881 and 1891 he was living with his parents and brother Rowland and sister Lucy. In 1901 he was married. I have looked for the family in 1871 and 1861 and can find no trace of them. Can anyone help please.

For census lookups we need to have names/birthplaces and birthyears of all family members

in the census of 1881 and 1891 he was living with his parents and brother Rowland and sister Lucy

What were his parents names and their respective birthyears and birthplaces

When and where were Rowland and Lucy born - pre or post 1861/71?

Were the family living in Kent in 1881/1891

From the 1881 Census it appears that the family were in Deptford London.  It appears that they were all born in different counties.... parents James iand Sarah in Surrey, Rowland and Samuel in Kent and Lucy in Derby.

Given this information I have checked the 1871 Census but not found them yet.  I will keep trying for you.

Thanks for your reply. I actually have them in 1881.However, Samuel is with his father James a surgeon. When he married, he gave his father as Rowland, Doctor of Medicine Jobmaster!! Do you know what a job master was or is?
I can find no further record of them anywhere. I have checked BMDs in Ancestry and Find my Past, I have checked all census records back to 1861 and have found nothing. It is very frustrating!"

Like you I have not been able to find any other mention of this family.

As to what a job master is, there are heaps of great site on the net that explain old occupations.  Have you checked them yet?  I have not heard of it before.

Hi Judith,
 I know this is a longshot,but have you considered James might have had an Army Career .
 (From private Sapper Bricklayer in 1851 to Surgeon by 1881 seems a big step,but not impossible.)
 There is a James Hill, Private, age 19 born Clapham (admittedly not Camberwell but the Sgt compiling the list could well have got it wrong)at the Woolwich barracks.on the 1851 census
Also there is a Marriage on free bmd of James Hill to Sarah Wilshere .Sep qtr 1864 Camberwell 897 1dwhich would tally with Rowlands birth  c. 1866. There were certainly Army postings at Ramsgate Gravesend and probably Derby .and between times the family could have been abroad at 61 and 71 census times.
Also as James was a Medical Man surely there are Qualification lists somewhere you could check.

PS:- the only description of Jobmaster I have is:-A person who supplied carriages, horses and drivers for hire.
I would have thought hardly a second occupation for a Surgeon.

I agree about Jobmaster. I also found that description and it did seem odd.
The other peculiarity was that on his marriage certificate, Samuel gave his father as Rowland! However, they did do funny things then didn't they.

'Derby' seems an odd entry and I should treat it with some doubt. The 1891 census has Lucy, 20, born in Gravesend. Although Samuel has Ramsgate as his place of birth in 1891, it is Gravesend in 1881, so a move between the two around 1871 is a possibility.

Freebmd has a birth for Lucy in Gravesend (Sep 1870) and Thanet (ie Ramsgate) (Sep 1871) so doesn't help.

I have a surgeon/apothecary ancestor who appears in the Guildhall records but they may just be for those qualifying in the city.
