David Kirkup
« on: Monday 31 January 05 18:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Looking for help on a David KIRKUP b c1820 in Brough Cumberland according to his census entries from 1861 thru 1891.   He married a Mary Carr b c1820 in Berwick on Tweed.   They married in Gateshead 10 Nov 1849 then produced 3 Children:

Walter Kirkup b 1851
Margaret Kirkup b 1852
John Carr Kirkup b 1856

all 3 were born in Durham

Im trying to find out when he was born and who his parents were.

His birth date is a bit suspect as he changed his age in each of the censuses although I believe that might have been to attract a new wife as he remarried a Alice Thompson in 1890 and in the 1891 census he said he was 61 but in the 1881 one he said he was 60 and she was only 55.

Any help or pointing in any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hi John

not sure if you are still looking for this but just in case....

IGI lists the following:

David Kirkup bapt 15 Aug 1824 Kirkandrews on Esk - Parents David Kirkup & Rebecca Irwin.

Kirkandrews on Esk is actually Kirkandrews on Eden (click on the source call number to verify) and Kirkandrews is the next village along from Burgh by Sands.

Burgh by Sands is pronounced locally as "Brough by Sands" and is very likely to be wrongly spelt by enumerators.

Looks hopeful!

John and Sue:
I am a descendant of David Kirkup b.1820, and John Carr Kirkup.  I am doing quite extensive work on the family.  David Kirkup was of course Farm Bailiff of Lintz Hall Farm near Tanfield.  The farm is still there - there is a photo on Google.  His most likely father (at present research) is David Kirkup b.1800 or so, of Kirkandrews upon Esk.  There were a lot of Kirkups in Kirkandrews upon Esk, and I am presently researching that line.  By the way, my information is that Kirkandrews on Eden is a different place, a few miles away.
David Kirkup 1820 gave his birthplace as Rockcliffe Cumberland, Longtown, Brough, and Maryport.  However... Burgh is close to Kirkandrews and is pronounced 'brough'.  And he had a maid from Maryport Cumberland, so I think just put ditto marks after her birthplace.
Rebecca IRWIN is also known as Rebecca IRVINE, should you look at that.  She is buried near Kirkandrews and I have a photo of her gravestone.  I will attach if I can.  (Courtesy of Bridget James).  OK, how do you attach a photograph?
I did not know that David Kirkup 1820 had remarried.  What is your source for that?
