Thank you all for replying and the suggestions.  Apologies for not staying on line or replying sooner.

Her marriage and death certs state Elizabeth Martha Barber, so I assumed she was registered as this.  The 1881 census for her family lists her siblings as being born in Bermondsey so I was wondering if she was actually born there too.  The birth in Q1 1872 St Savours Southwark (mentioned by Galium)  I think may cover Bermondsey area ???  The marriage of Henry charles  also in Southwark may fit.  So think I will take a chance and order both of these.  Have checked her siblings and there are entries in St Saviours for Alfred Henry and Thomas Edward - Martha St Olaves Southwark, so all around the same area.

Did I read it right - 1871 census Martha's husband insane???

I will follow up on Eliz Talbot as that sounds interesting.  Are the Thetford records on line by chance?

I have only been researching for a few months and am completely addicted.  Finding the London ancestors a bit tricky though, but have gone back to mid 1600 in Kent on one line (havent doubled checked all parish records yet though).

Thanks again
Horrie's dau!

I hadn't noticed the 'insane' bit, but you are right.  If you look at this family in 1861:

Class: RG9/; Piece: 325/ Folio: 46/ Page: 32

You will see that Martha's husband is name Thomas - and he is a hatter.  I think it was something to do with hatters using mercury that affected them adversely (hence 'mad as a hatter').

In 1871 Thomas Barber , hatter is  a patient in Caterham district asylum:

Class: RG10; Piece: 838; Folio: 124; Page: 16

You will also notice that the family in 1861 includes  a son named George, aged 12, and one named as George Chas. , aged 7.  I  suspect there's been a mistake, and the younger one should be Henry.

The older George is still in Bermondsey in 1871

Class: RG10/ Piece: 628/ Folio: 48/ Page: 30

He and his wife Charlotte have a 4 month old daughter named Elizabeth, who may be the Elizabeth Martha Barber registered in Lambeth March Q 1871.
