Hoy Family in Essex
« on: Sunday 06 March 05 20:22 GMT (UK) »
We are looking for some more information about the Hoy family. Joseph was born in Sept quarter 1845 in Epping. He appears as a boarder in Chipping Onger on the 1871 census and married Elizabeth Clark on 11.07.1874 at the Marsh Street Congregational Church, West Ham. They had one daughter called Elizabeth. He was a platelayer for Great Eastern Railway Company. He was killed by a train on 21.06.1889, at Chingford, Essex. The coroner's inquest for Essex was held on the 24.06.1889.
Has anyone any knowledge of the family, which appeared to originate from Magdalen Laver, Essex, of the whereabouts of the coroner's report, a newspaper report of the time or of the whereabouts of the Great Eastern Railway Company's records?
Family lore also tells us that maybe two of his brothers were also killed on the railway. Any information on this?
Thanks
Sarah

Liz and Frances,
Many thanks for your help. We did not have any information from the 1861 census, so we are delighted with the new details. We have traced Elizabeth Hoy, whose mother remarried and moved to Chingford and had two more children, one of which was my Great-Grandmother.
All the best
Sarah

Hi,
Joseph Hoy was the brother of my wife's Great Grandfather Thomas who was also killed on the railway.
He was also a platelayer and was hit by a train on the 28 Feb. 1890 and killed.
We have his death certificate but no newspaper or coroners report

I have an ancestor named Peter Hoy. He was born about 1817 in Stratford Essex I believe. I know nothing about his family. Any Peters in your family?

My father had an accident when he worked for the LNER at Stratford Station and I found a report of it at Kew Archives. This was in 1831 but they hold books of reports for much earlier.

She acidentally sent a message to the wrong person today and I am trying to work out who it is meant for. I believe it is you she meant to contact so hope you will now be in touch. Looks like David is also connected.

I am researching the Hoy family as this line is my husbands fathers line.
Yes i can cofirm that all three brothers died at the hands of the Ger.
Unfortunately the youngest son William lost his 14 yr old to death also by drowning to which was also accidental.

If you would not mind i would also love to have a copy of that photo  if that is of John and Jane.
My husbands grandfather was Charles Hoy who died at the age of 27 yrs in Hackney.
Charles father was Thomas whom worked and was a foreman Platelayer.
