Hi BTee

Unfortunately the trade directories I have covering Halkyn specifically only go up to 1895 where a William Salisbury is listed for the Royal Oak.   I've checked Holywell ones that go to 1936 but there is no mention of the Royal Oak in Halkyn  - just one in Greenfield Road Holywell where a GH Jones is listed.

Hi there,

It may be worth your while to contact Mold and District Civic Society. They are a historical society for the area. One of their members, David Rowe, is currently producing details of old pubs in the area, it may not run to Halkyn but it's worth a try.

They are at the Town Hall, Earl Road, Mold and a contact phone number is 01352741422.

Also have a look at www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northeast

Good luck with your research.

Thanks for  the help
Im looking for my wife's grand mother  /great grandparents.
Her grandmother  was a Dora Jones (maiden name)
I have her and her parents  Robert Jones and Anne Jones at Bryn Alun Rhydymwyn in 1901 , Robert at that time is listed as a Lead Miner.
The family story is that Robert and Anne then  had a Pub  near to  and a bit lower than the Blue Bell Pub in Halkyn.
I believe this to be the  Royal Oak ( now a private house called the Old Royal Oak, just across the road from the Blue Bell).
We believe that  Robert died whilst they had the Pub - prior to Dora marrying in 1921, Anne  then remarried and the story is that her new husband did not want to keep the pub.

Story so far - we have  Robert Jones listed as licensee of the Royal Oak , Pant Y Go , Halkyn , in the  Inns register of 1903 but alas have also found his burial in Rhydymwyn in 1904

Hello, it's been almost a year since you were on this site enquiring about the Royal Oak Inn.  I've only just registered today so hopefully this information will reach you.

Bryn Ellis helped me immensely a few years ago providing information on my step-grandmother, Megan Evans, who grew up in the area before marrying my grandfather and moving to Flint.  The information Bryn provided stated that Megan's father, John Ellis Evans, took over the tenancy of the Royal Oak in 1912 and then the licence was transferred to Megan's mother, Margaret Evans, in 1924.  As you know, the Royal Oak was closed in 1938.

Hope this helps!

/Hi, I have just registered today and the information here is rather muddled.

The licence was held by John Ellis Evans in 1912 but he was NOT the father of Megan Evans - he was her uncle. Megan Evans was the daughter of Anne Evans (nee Jones) and William Evans. Megan Evans went to live with John Ellis Evans and Margaret Evans aged 6 when her mother died in 1899 giving birth to a son John Evans. There was also another sister, Nellie Evans who was my grandmother. My mother says she was sent to stay at the Royal Oak with her Aunty Maggie after she contracted TB living in Liverpool. Hope this puts the record straight and I would love to hear from you as I have been struggling to find connections on the Evans/Jones side of my family.

Look forward to hearing from you!    ]

Hi,

Got that slightly wrong - Megan went to live with her Aunt Elizabeth Jones not Margaret as I said before.

I have now checked the 1911 census and this confirms what my mother said.

Talked to her about your family and she remembers your grandfather?? was a butcher in Flint??
