Can someone please advise on the approximate date of this photo, given the gentleman's clothing?

The gentlemen of the day had to wear those collars...it must have been a pain in the neck literally :( Maybe that's where the phrase came from  ???

That's what I'm trying to establish, mab.  I have been offered two possibilities - one possibility is the father, and the alternative identity is his son.  If I can narrow down the date of the photo, it should be easy to establish to which generation he belongs!

PS ... in my school days I had to wear a wing collar.  Surprisingly, you quickly got used to it, and didn't notice this hard starched band around your throat!

Is the photo mounted in a photographers frame and if so does it give a photographers name  ??? Men's fashions weren't as mobile as women's fashions so it could be anytime in a bit of a range  :-\ Do you have any pics of this same gentleman with ladies  ???

It's all a bit complicated, mab ... the answer to your question is "yes" ... if he is the father!  Here is a photo from 1909 with lots of ladies.  The father appears in this photo, and he was 38 years old at the time ... the problem is, I don't know which of the men he is!!!  He is one of the four gentlemen standing at the back!

So, given that in the original photo he is somewhat younger (I think) ... perhaps around his early 30's, the question is whether the original photo dates from around 1900 or around 1930.  I think I know the answer, butI am no expert!

Tim, Tim, do you have the original of the second photo? What an incredibly beautiful one! Is it from Ottawa?

If you do, please scan it in colour, at 300 dpi, and post it in its own thread! I'd love to see a tidy, and especially with that nasty overhead pipe removed A little colour would be nice, too. Lovely, lovely photo.
