Elizabeth Eames Bangor c1873
« on: Saturday 04 October 08 01:02 BST (UK) »
Hi there
I wonder if anyone can help
I've managed to determine my grt grandmother was Elizabeth Eames - born Bangor, daughter of William Eames (Master Mariner - not 100% sure where he originates?), but am struggling to find mucj information on her

I have quite a bit of info - but am now a bit stuck - info I have is:
1881, 1891 and 1901 census info plus her birth and marriage certificates - details as follows:

Marriage: Cathedral Church parish of BAngor 12/08/1892 to John Richard Williams (22 yrs) painter from 2 Garden Sq Bangor . Father of JRW was MEshach Williams - Ships CArpenter . Father of EE (21 yrs) was William Eames - MAster Mariner (ship Petrel as I've later discovered) of 50 Ambrose St. Witnesses on certificate look like Cadwaladr Jones (for EE) and Samuel I Nobley (for JRW)

Birth certificate: 15/08/1873 ELizabeth daughter of Williams Eames (Mariner, merchant service) and MArgaret (nee WIlliams) living at 29 Fountain St, Bangor
Can anyone please help me in finding more info re:

1) where JRW & EW (nee EE) are buried - I beleive this will be somewhere in BAngor, but having recently visited there and spent several hours in the two cemetries I found there, I wasn't able to find a grave / headstone for them

2) any more info re: her father William Eames - and wife MArgaret - again, I beleive they will have been buried in Bangor, but my cemetry searches found only one tomb for Eames and it was very difficult to read, but didn't seem to relate to them. I'd also love to find out where William and MArgaret came from. the info on the census suggests William is from Pwllheli born c 1838. I've got a birth certificate for a William born 1838 (though can't be 100% sure it is the right one!) showing Crywrach, Llanengan, Caernarvonshire as place of birth and parents as John and Eleanor - though nothing to confirm this IS the right one! Only info I have re: Margaret Eames (nee Williams) is from 1871 - 1901 census (living BAngor) and this confirms she was born BAngor c 1845. Their first child was born c 1868 - but I can't find marriage certificate details - which will help me ascertain if William's parents ARE the right ones!

3) I've not been able to find the birth certificate relating to John Richard Williams (husband of Elizabeth Eames). His marriage certificate shows his father as being Meshach Williams - and census records for JR and Meschach have prompted me to think JRW mother was Margaret - another genaeologist has provided me a marirage certificate for Meshach WIlliams and MArgaret Hussey Burgh - but Im struggling in finding any more information on them too ! So any information anyone can assit with on JRW and his parents, etc  HUGELY appreciated

What a large wish list I have - hope sonmeone can help
many thanks indeed
regards

This is one elusive family!  I may have found something from 1861 courtesy of www.rhiw.com

1861
Llanengan
Abode  CONGLE CAE

Eleanor Eames  Head   Widow  age 45    Miners Widow
Moses      "        Son                         13
henry                 Son                          7
eleanor              Dau                         4
Robert               Son                          2

Robert is the link to the 1881 census entry of Robert Eames 21 Brother in Law showing that he is William Eames brother and therefore "in law" to Margaret (b 1845).  This seems to confirm your find of William's parents being John and Eleanor as Eleanor is shown above as a widow!

BMD entries for Pwllheli tend to confirm this too with a Robert Eames birth registered in 1858  - also registered in that district are William 1838, John 1840, dorothy 1842, evan 1845 and John 1861.  Now whether they all share the same parents is a different thing ....a few do I am sure.

Also in the 1861 census transcrioption on rhiw.com website is

Dorothy Eames ( links to the one on BMD) age 17 Gen Serv Unm b Lanengan living at TY CAPEL
John  Eames                ditto                        age 20 Servant Unm b llanengan  living at PENRHYN MAWR
Evan Eames                 ditto                        age 16 visiting PENRHYN MAWR

Like a say they may be related they may be not.  Having found Penrhyn Mawr on a map it is not too far from where William b 1838 was born as shown on his birth cert - i think you have the right one!

Death certs for William Eames is Jun 1909 aged 69  puts dob at 1840-ish (Bangor 11b p 309)
Margaret Eames is Mar 1919 aged 74 puts DOB at 1845-ish (Bangor 11b  p792)

the death certs may give a further clue as to where they are buried.

William Eames and Margaret Williams marriage - the connection on how they met may be found thanks to the vessel William is on in the 1881census.   The boat was registered at Beaumaris in 1866.......owner William Williams and in 1873 Mr Williams lets his new son in law captain the boat.
A most tenuous jump of faith this but one i think worth you investigating - the dates just tie in too well - see this at the following (National Archvies)
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=221-wdb&cid=314#314

This may raise more questions than answers but at least it is hopefully a little progress for you

Mair
thank you so very much for all the information - some great to validate against what I had already from the census - but I hadn't got the info re: "leap of faith" in William captaining the ship for his father in law, nor the various borth and death record s- I'll pursue these and no doubt be back here again with any more questions this may raise  ;)

once again HUGE thanks - much appreciated.....

kind regards

Hi Cajondy

Don't know whether you have looked at the British libarary database - temporarily free access

http://access.gale.com/newstrial/

one of the newspapers covered is the North Wales Chronicle.  Definitely worth searching for your Eames family and shipping interests.

Hi Heather
thanks for the link - I think I'm having a blonde moment as it asks for a password and I don't seem to be able to find how to register (please tell me it's just because it's late Friday night, and not because I'm having a blonde moment!)

kind regards

Hi, my great grandmother Dorathy and your Elizabeth were sisters. I started researching the family history a few years back but left it for a few years before recently typing in William Eames b. Llanengan of SS Petrel fame into google and finding your posts. Its great to confirm some of my research but I still have loads of questions too. We have the original marriage certificate for William Eames and Margaret Williams, photos and correspondance plus other info if youre still stuck in your research please do ask for further info. Meanwhile I wonder if anyone knows why William and Margaret were married in Liverpool? and where his parents John Eames and Eleanor (nee ?)  were descended from before Llanengan?
