1841 census lookup please: Edward Chesters
« on: Friday 03 October 08 04:50 BST (UK) »
Can't find an entry for Edward Chesters in the 1841 census but maybe a fresh set of eyes will have more success.

In 1836 he's recorded on his son George's baptismal entry (Chester: St. Mary on The Hill) as a "Post Boy" living on Crane St. Chester.

George's mother Ann is listed in 1841 census as living on Crane St. with her father John Chesters and her son George - but no mention of Edward.

There are entries for an Edward Chesters b.Chester 1813 (or 1819) in the 1851 1861 and 1871 census reports (married to a Margaret Ince in Liverpool 1844) but I have no proof this is the same Edward as on George's baptismal record.
I suspect he could be given the clue that he lists his occupation in the 1851 Tranmere census as letter carrier for the Birkenhead post office.

I really need to find out where he was in 1841.  Can anyone help?  Any suggestions really appreciated!

Brilliant!  Thank you so much! That would be the Edward Chesters I've been hunting for. (For the last 9 months!)  Later in the 1871 census he gives his occupation as Saddler and the other family members fit.

Now whether he's the same Edward as on that baptismal certificate I still can't prove for sure.

Would you mind checking the other Edward in Bunbury so I can rule him out.

The only other piece of evidence I have to go on is that on his son George's marriage certificate in 1864 he lists his father Edward as a "coachman".  Perhaps "saddler" is close enough!

I really appreciate your help in solving this puzzle!

Cilla, you are welcome.  I did a wildcard search and put Ches* with the birth date plus or minus 5 years.  I can't tell you the number of times I have searched for months and not found any connections.  I then learnt from another Rootschatter (thats why we all help one another) to do a wildcard search.  It is also worth looking for a first name, place or county of birth and year of birth.  This is also suprising what it will bring up.

I will post the Bunbury one as soon as I have cooked the evening meal.

Good to know!  I thought that's possibly what had happened - a entry error either from the original recorder or the transcriber - but didn't know how to do the wild card search thingy!  I'll remember that in the future!

No rush - I've been chipping at this brick wall for months now so a little longer makes no difference!
I really appreciate the help you've given me.

Hi, Cilla, this is the family that are in Spurstow, parish Bunbury.  They are transcribed as Chester, but the original definitely states Chesters.

You have been so helpful kathb - my brick wall has crumbled!! Thank you so much for your time.
I'm fairly certain now that the first Edward you found must be my Greatx3 Grandfather who didn't do the "right thing" by my Great x 3 Grandmother!  Unless there is still more to the story!
Off to hunt for bastardy bonds now!  ;)

This has been very much appreciated!
Cilla.
