Milford - Antrim Ireland
« on: Friday 03 October 08 00:56 BST (UK) »
I am looking for help in locating a James Milford of County Antrim.   I do not have much to go on here.  I know that this James Milford is related to my Bryson family who came from Donegore.

In 1836 my ancestor, John Bryson died in Allegheny County PA after coming to America from Antrim in 1830.  In his will he leaves a legacy to his "grandson, James Milford".   I am desperate to find out who the parents of this James Milford were?  Would seem that it must be a Bryson daughter...as he is listed as the grandson.

In 1875, Charles Bryson ( son of John) wrote a will here in America in which he too also left a legacy to James Milford.   In this will it states " I give to my nephew, James Milford of County Antrim in Ireland the sum of"....the will was not probated until 1884.    Obviously this James Milford was part of my family - being a grandson and nephew, he was alive in 1836 and 1875...whether he was alive to receive this sum of $200 in 1884 I do not know.   CAN I FIND THIS OUT SOMEHOW?  The will states to "be paid within 1 year of my death".

Anyone following Milfords?  I have had absolutely no luck finding this name.  Are there Milfords in Donegore?  Killbride?  Anyone with Bryson connections?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

HI

Have a look at the Wills Database on the Public Records office for Northern Ireland (PRONI) and do a search for Milfords. There is a James Milford from whitepark near Ballyclare.  Could this be him?

The will was probated on the 13 February 1901 so the PRONI will have a copy of the Will and other papers. You can email them and get a copy of the Will sent to you for a small fee.

John, Thanks for this info.  I have tried several times to access the PRONI Wills Database, but it will not let me.   What might I be doing wrong?

Thanks
Ruth

Mary,
Thanks for this info, it certainly looks like it should fit, but the dates don't really fall into place.  Since this marriage takes place in 1849 it is confusing...but who is to say that the James Milford I am looking for
who may have had a mother named Bryson....didn't up and marry a women named Bryson...who may or may not have been a cousin etc..
it has happend before.   So I shall keep this in mind.

Would I be able to order this certificate?   Might it give me parents names?  I've not been lucky enough to obtain any Irish certificates  so I'm not sure what I can get or what info may  be on this.  I sure would not be opposed to ordering this one.

Thanks,
Ruth

Irish death certificate do not list parents names, date or place of birth, or name of spouse (unless informant).

hi ruth,

go to this link and all the information you need about ordering certs. should be there, marriage certs for non catholics began in 1845 so you could order the one mary mentioned;

Yes, as tony says, PRONI site is very troublesome and seems to be down more at the moment than functioning.

Just to clarify my earlier post- ordering death certificate for James (d.1901) will not get names of parents, etc. as I said.

However, the civil marriage certificates do list fathers' names and occupations as well as the residence of bride and groom at time of marriage. Mothers' names, birthdates and places will not be on the certificate. Age is usually given as 'full' unless underage when an age in years is given- if you are very lucky the minister might have put in the ages of bride and groom anyway- is the early years of registration this did sometimes happen but don't count on it.
