Hi Giantpanda, You're in luck I'm also related to the James Beresford (b abt 1836) who went to Brisbane Australia and have some info I could share. James Beresford is my Great Grandfather, his first wife was Mary Elizabeth Richards they had nine children. Are you related to this first spouse or the marriage in Soke-on-Trent to Frances Brereton who also had nine children! My Grandfather was the third born child of James & Frances, Henry Beresford (b1890). It's worth noting that the name Beresford can be spelt several different ways. I have Berresford, Berisford and Berrisford recorded, all in the same ancestoral family group.

Hi Nigel
Thanks for the reply. I am cousin to Margaret. James Beresford is her great grandfather from the first marriage. I only knew of two children to james and his first marriage one was Albert and one was Lizzie who was born in Brisbane c 1879 then went back to UK and and married Benjamin Elkin from Stoke on Trent in 1899. They went on to have Lily who is Margarets mother.
Margaret knows little from her mothers side, we are paternally related. She does not research herself but is so excited that I have got this far with her information.
If there is anything that you could tell me about the family going to Australia and the events thereafter, I would be grateful. I have searched emigration and imigration with no luck.
I know that James returned and later married Frances. I assumed that Mary Elizabeth had died for it to be so.
Did they all return to England or did some children stay in Australia.
Anything would be very useful
I am seeing Margaret on Wednesday and have so much to tell her.
So James is both your and Margarets great grandfather

Many thanks Nigel
Regards
